ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Anchorage cab driver convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in his cab two years ago was sentenced to 15 years in prison with five suspended Thursday afternoon.
Rafael Lopez Martinez was convicted in August 2011 of second-degree sexual assault for raping a woman in March 2010 near her East Anchorage home after she fell asleep in his cab. The woman told police she woke up to find her jeans and underwear removed and Martinez lying beside her; after an investigation, he was arrested that summer for the crime.
The victim briefly addressed an Anchorage courtroom Thursday, as did Martinez. Speaking through a translator, he told the court in Spanish that he thought the sex was consensual.
