Studded Tires Street-Legal Statewide Until May 1

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Studded tires will remain street-legal in southern areas of Alaska for the rest of April, bringing them into line with the date for tires’ removal in the rest of the state, Alaska State Troopers announced Friday.

The decision by Department of Public Safety Commissioner Joe Masters makes May 1 the studded-tire deadline for all Alaska roads. The usual deadline for roads south of 60 degrees north latitude is April 15, but poor road conditions have been reported in areas south of that line.

Anyone caught driving with studded tires after the May 1 deadline could be issued a correctable $50 ticket.
