ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police said a shooting victim died Monday evening several hours after a domestic dispute at an apartment building located at 3032 W. 42nd Ave.
34-year-old James Marquez was identified by the Anchorage Police Department as the shooting suspect and he was arrested on charges of 1st and 2nd degree murder.
APD received a call shortly around 5:44 p.m. Monday about a shooting at an upstairs apartment at the location and found a woman shot in the head. She was taken to the hospital in grave condition.
Police described Marquez as a husband or boyfriend and he allegedly shot his partner, called police, and said he needed to go to jail.
“Perhaps in a situation like that, it’s possible for a person to recognize the seriousness of what they’ve done and recognize they’re responsible for severe injury in another person,” Lt. Dave Parker, APD spokesperson, said. “I can imagine that’s enough to shock a person into doing the right thing like calling the police.”
Marquez was arraigned in Anchorage court on Tuesday afternoon.
Editor's Note: Corrected spelling of suspect's name. APD originally released name as "Marques" instead of "Marquez." KTUU’s Jason Lamb and Chris Klint contributed to this report.
