ANCHORAGE, Alaska — North Slope Borough police shot and injured a man in Barrow Wednesday morning who threatened to shoot himself and police officers responding to a domestic-violence incident.
Officers were called at about 5:07 a.m. to 1663 Okpik St. where the suspect, a 31-year-old man, had left the scene. He subsequently returned with a firearm, which he pointed at himself while threatening to shoot himself.
Police ordered the man to put down the weapon, but he didn’t do so. When he pointed the gun at officers, one of them shot him, inflicting a non-lethal wound to his arm and shoulder.
The man was treated at Shell Simmonds Memorial Hospital, then medevaced to the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, where he remains in serious but stable condition. An investigation into the incident is in progress.
North Slope Borough police were unavailable for comment early Wednesday evening.
