ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A pair of Alaskan basketball players will enjoy a homecoming for the 2012 Great Alaska Shootout. UAA unveiled the fields for the 35th annual tournament, which takes place from November 20th to 24th at Sullivan Arena.
The women's tournament features 2012 Division II west region champion UAA, plus Division I programs Utah Sate and Prairie View A&M. Jenna Johnson of Wasilla, Alaska, plays for Utah State and averaged 5.8 points per game as a junior this past season. A fourth women's team will be added to the field later on.
Also returning to Alaska will be Damon Bell-Holter of Hydaburg, Alaska with the Oral Roberts men's team. Oral Roberts has agreed to come to the Shootout for the second time in eight seasons and is coming off a 27-7 season. Bell-Holter scored 7.9 points per game as a junior.
The rest of the men's tournament includes UAA, Belmont, Charlotte, Loyola Marymount, Northeastern, Texas State, and UC Riverside. Once again, the field lacks a school from a BCS conference. Aside from Oral Roberts, Belmont might be the top team in the tournament after advancing to the NCAA tournament with a record of 27-8.
