ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The homes of at least three Anchorage families were destroyed after a blaze broke out at a fourplex on Briarwood Street early Saturday morning.
The Anchorage Fire Department responded to the scene and evacuated families from the building.
One tenant heard the fire alarm and alerted the rest of the building, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.
The Red Cross is providing temporary housing for several of the residents after the fire severely damaged three housing units.
Captain Mike Melchert said when his unit arrived at the scene, the first thing they did was complete a search and evacuate anyone who was still in the building.
"There was heavy fire coming from the first floor in the second unit. It was rolling up the outside of the building and getting into the attic space," he said.
