ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage police say a 1-year-old girl was run over and killed by her mother's minivan in a Muldoon trailer park Monday afternoon.

APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker said Vanessa Thao was accidentally struck as her mother left her parking spot the Rangeview Trailer Court at 705 Muldoon Rd., north of Muldoon’s intersection with DeBarr Road.

Thao was reportedly playing near the vehicle when her mother and another family member got into the van, but they didn't see her and she was hit.

Parker said officers were initially called to the scene at 3:12 p.m. Thao suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the hospital, with an officer performing CPR on her throughout the trip, but was subsequently declared dead at the hospital.

Neighbors say children frequently play in the area, and are often at risk of being struck by vehicles.

Editor's note: Vanessa Thao's age was revised by APD after initial statements at the scene.
