Homer, AK — Homer Police say 57-year-old Dave Boone died in a construction accident on Friday, when the excavator he was operating flipped over.

According to a press release, police and Homer volunteer firefighters responded to the accident off West Hill Rd. on Reber Dr.  They pronounced Boone dead at the scene.

In a phone interview, his son Corey, tells Channel 2 that Boone was helping a friend clear some property to build a house.

"He was doing what he always did.  Helping people out," said Corey.  "We will always cherish the memories and adventures we shared over the years."

The Boone family adds that Dave was a longtime Homer resident and a commercial fisherman.

In an email they sent Channel 2 his obituary:

Dave Boone, 57

David William Boone, 57, long-time Homer, Alaska resident, died Saturday, May 4, 2012, from injuries sustained in an excavating accident.

Dave was born February 22, 1955, in Southwick, Idaho, on his grandparents’ farm. He married his wife, Marcia, in 1977 and they moved to Alaska the same year, settling in Homer where they lived and raised their two sons, Corey and Brady. He worked for many years in Prudhoe Bay, AK with Schlumberger Oilfield Services, before finally fulfilling his long-time dream of becoming a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay in 1986.  In addition to commercial fishing, Dave and Marcia also own and operate The Highliner House in Homer, Alaska.

Dave was a passionate hunter, fisherman, snowmachiner, golfer, and loved anything outdoors.  He especially enjoyed fishing with Marcia and his sons for King Salmon on the Kenai River, then moose and sheep hunting in the fall. On the day he died, Dave was so excited, after just receiving word that after 16 years of applying, he had finally been drawn for a coveted Wyoming Big Horn Sheep permit. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with family and friends, always ready to plan the next adventure!  In recent years, he and Marcia spent part of each winter at their second home in Arizona where they played golf and met many new friends from around the country.

Dave was a very loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He had a passion for life and lived every day to its fullest.  He would fish 24-7 when the kings were running off the Anchor River even when his fishmates were begging for a break. You just never knew when the bite would come on, but most likely it was 4am or earlier. He attacked his renewed love of golf with that same gusto and his goal was to shoot a round under 80. No doubt he’d have reached that goal with a little more time. He gave his sons so many moments to cherish forever and they will be his living legacy. He was an inspiration, confidant, leader, and the rock that his family leaned on. We love him dearly and will hold him in our hearts forever.

Dave is survived by his wife, Marcia; son, Corey; daughter-in-law, Alison; granddaughter, Emmie Claire; son, Brady; future daughter-in-law Rhianna Carr; father, Bill Boone and Sharon Thompson, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Nina.

Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 pm., Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Homer United Methodist Church, 770 East End Road, Homer, Alaska.  All friends of Dave are welcome to come share and join in celebration of Dave’s life.  In lieu of burial, the family plans to spread some of Dave’s ashes over the many places that he loved and enjoyed so much.

Contributions in memory of Dave may be made to the non-profit organization, Hunt-of-a-Lifetime, (www.huntofalifetime.org), whose mission is to grant hunting & fishing dreams for children who have been diagnosed with life threatening illnesses.
