ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Anchorage area residents participated in the national Bike to Work Day event on Friday.

Green Star, a nonprofit organization that encourages environmentally safe practices, set up a bacon station on the East Chester Creek Trail for riders to visit before continuing on their way to work.

A representative from Green Star said the Anchorage Bike to Work Day started 8 years ago. They handed out reflectors and trail maps as people visited the snack station.

Bikers said they wanted to use their bicycles instead of driving to save a little money and get exercise. Bicyclist Kelly Donnelly said, "Biking to work is a much better commute to work. It gets your body moving and you enjoy the day. Anchorage is perfect for biking and you get free food on the way there."

Chris Wood, a Bike to Work Day participant who commutes to work from Eagle River to South Anchorage everyday said he was motivated to switch from motor vehicle to a bicycle by gas. "It's a 45 minute drive and a 1 hr 45 min bike ride, so you get good exercise and safe $15 of gas money for the day," he said.

3,300 people participated in the Bike to Work Day event last year. Officials said they predict a total of over 4,000 for this year.
