Mat-Su Fire: Two Structures Total Loss in Sutton Blaze

July 01, 2012|By Christine Kim | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Valley emergency personnel responded to a fire in Sutton on Wright Way about 3:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Johnny Murdock with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Department of Emergency Services said when the first crews arrived on scene, two structures were fully engulfed. He said one was at least a 2,000 sq. ft. woodshop or shed, and another was an old cabin located next to it.

Murdock said the primary concern was keeping the fire away from a nearby home. He said crews used 2.5 lines to fight the fire. The home, he said, was saved, but the other two structures are a total loss.

Murdock said additional support came from Butte, Palmer and Central Mat-Su to make sure there was enough water supply on location to battle the blaze. They contained the fire in about 45 minutes, he said, and as of 6 p.m. crews were on scene making sure there were no hot spots.

Murdock said the homeowners were not home at the time, and a neighbor who saw the smoke column called for help. No one was injured in the fire.
