Greek Artist Transforms Anchorage Greek Orthodox Church

July 06, 2012|by Jason Lamb | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The inside of the Greek Orthodox church off O'Malley Road in South Anchorage is a little brighter this week, thanks to the work of an artist who traveled to Alaska all the way from Greece.

Konstantine Theodorou spent the past 15 days painting authentic byzantine iconography in gorgeous detail inside the church.

The art depicts different scenes from the bible, and churchgoers say the paintings help connect them to the spirits and god.

Eventually Theodorou's artwork will grace every square inch of the inside of the church, but that will likely take a year or two to complete.

"While I'm painting, I transfer myself to the miracles of the bible," Theodorou said.  "I'm not quite here, if I relive the miracles of the bible."

His work is based on a design that dates back to the year 500.

The Greek orthodox church will be open for people to see the artwork close up during its annual Greek festival that it's holding on August 17-19.
