Family and Volunteers Call Off Search For Missing Runner Michael LeMaitre

July 15, 2012|by Abby Hancock | Channel 2 News

Anchorage, AK — After more than a week of continuously searching Mount Marathon in Seward, the family of missing runner Michael LeMaitre is calling off the search.

The Seward Fire department has also suspended its search over the weekend, due to depleting resources and poor weather conditions. The Seward Fire chief says small search teams will be sent on the mountain when conditions improve.

LeMaitre's son-in-law, Curtis Lynn, says the mountain is slick and becoming more dangerous, and the family does not want volunteers to continue risking injury. Lynn says LeMaitre's family is grateful for the massive search effort, and all the people who pitched in.

"It was an extremely hard decision," he said. "We don't have the closure that we want. But I don't want to see anybody else getting really hurt for recovery," said Lynn.

He asks that anyone who spots anything out of the ordinary on Mt. Marathon, to report it to the Seward Fire Department.
