NENANA, Alaska — A young female adult was killed on the Parks Highway when a moose crossed the road early Wednesday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.
AST said 19-year-old Ashley Hecox, of Nenana, was driving a Chevy Cobalt southbound near milepost 286.5 when an adult cow moose crossed around 1:21 a.m. Hecox crashed into the moose and then her vehicle crossed the center line and struck a tractor pulling two trailers.
Troopers say 46-year-old Robert Schmitt was driving the tractor when Hecox’s vehicle struck two axels on the tractor.
Another tractor on the highway was damaged by debris on the roadway, and troopers say 42-year-old Troy Call, of Chugiak, was driving that vehicle.
According to a troopers dispatch, Schmitt and Call were not injured. AST’s initial investigation revealed Hecox was not wearing a seat belt and her remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office.
