Kenai Wins Twice In Final At-Bat, Makes State Legion Finals

August 03, 2012|byKevin Wells | Channel 2 Sports

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Kenai Twins won twice on Friday to make the championship round of the state American Legion Baseball Tournament.  All they have to do now is duplicate that same feat to win their first title since 1995.

Josiah Covey delivered game-ending RBI's in both of Kenai's victories in the elimination bracket on Friday as the Twins knocked off South, 10-9 in 11 innings and then took out Eagle River, 9-8.

Against the Wolverines, A.J. Hull led off the bottom of the 11th with his fourth hit of the game, a triple that put him in scoring position.  Covey hit a sacrifice fly to send Hull home to lift Kenai to victory.

Then with only an hour break, the Twins trailed the Wolves, 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning.  A pair of runs in the sixth tied the game, setting the stage for Covey yet again in the bottom of the ninth.  With Jacob Darrow on second base, Covey looped a hit into shallow right field to score the winning run yet again to give Kenai the one-run win.  Covey has three walk-off RBI's in the tournament.

Top-seeded Kenai advances to face Chugiak on Saturday at 2:00 at Mulcahy Stadium.  The Twins have one loss in the double elimination tournament, while the sixth-seeded Mustangs are undefeated in the tournament.  If Kenai wins, they'll face off again at 6:00.
