Juneau To Play In Medium Schools Football Division

October 22, 2012|by Kevin Wells | Channel 2 Sports

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Despite consistent results on the field over the course of the last decade, the football program at Juneau High School will move down a classification starting in 2013.  Crimson Bears head coach Rich Sjoroos confirmed to Channel 2 that Juneau will be members of the medium schools division in the Southeast Conference.

The addition of the Crimson Bears gives the medium schools division 10 teams, four of which reside in the Southeast Conference.  It is a cost effective move for Juneau, which for the last eight seasons has played in the Railbelt Conference against teams in Fairbanks and the Mat-Su Valley.

The school has also endured a decline in enrollment over the years.  As Alaska's capital city expanded its school system to include Thunder Mountain High School in 2009, Juneau is down below 700 students, while most teams in the large schools division have well over 1,000 students to draw from.  The maximum enrollment to be eligible for the medium schools division is 800.

This past season, Juneau finished 4 and 5 overall but made the state playoffs in large schools for the 10th straight year.
