ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The winningest musher in Iditarod history will not compete in 2013. Rick Swenson, the event's only five time champion, recently told race marshal Mark Nordman that he has withdrawn from the race he has become synonymous with. Nordman says no specific reason was given for Swenson's decision.
In addition to his unprecedented five victories, Swenson has raced in 35 Iditarods, finishing in the top 10 on 24 occasions, including 20 consecutive between his rookie year of 1976 and 1995. Swenson's most recent top 10 came in 2004 when he finished 7th. In 2012, he came across the line in 30th position. Despite lower finishes in recent years, he continues to be well thought of in the dog mushing community for his dog care.
