JBER Airman Surprises Kids in Easter Bunny Suit

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Easter came a day early for one military family stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, who were reunited Saturday for the first time in six months.

Harry Dunmire and his wife Alecia have spent 12 of the last 18 months apart, each of them serving in the Air Force, being stationed in Afghanistan and Africa respectively.

Being apart though is what makes this family appreciate each other.  Both Harry and Alecia have spent the last 14-years in the Air Force, being deployed a combined 16 times.

“When you have time together, you make the best of it, because you don’t know when they’re going to call and say you got to go,” said Alecia Dunmire.

The last time Harry saw his wife or his 3 children was 6 months ago, until Saturday when he surprised his kids, whose wish for Easter was for their dad to get home safely.

“I’m really ready to see my kids,” said Harry, before he disguised himself as the Easter bunny in preparation to greet his two young sons and 18-year-old daughter. "My kids don’t know that I’m coming back, they don’t know I’m here yet.”

But when Harry removed his Easter bunny head, his boys got the Easter gift they hoped for, their dad.

For the Dunmire family, the holiday weekend kicked off with a memorable beginning.

While the Dunmires are together for now, unfortunately it wont last for long.  Their oldest daughter, 18-year-old Makala, enlisted in the Army and begins basic training on April 15th.
