AT&T Network Outage Frustrates Hundreds of Alaska Customers

April 30, 2013|By Neil Torquiano | Channel 2 News

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An AT&T network outage was reportedly fixed within an hour Tuesday afternoon, however GCI and Alaska Communications customers were reporting service disruptions due to the issue.

Andy Colley with AT&T Corporate Communications said a “network link went down around 4:52 p.m. Alaska time and was repaired around 5:45 p.m. Alaska time.”  Customers may have experienced block calls during the outage.

“All the networks are interconnected,” said GCI spokesperson David Morris. “It’s hard to figure out which one is having an issue.”

Morris confirmed that GCI has received customer complaints and it was trying to route an alternative network.

Alaska Communications says the outage affected its 4G customers statewide, leaving them without voice services, but data services, such as text and email were still available. 3G customers were not affected by the disruptions.

“We don’t like to play the blame game,” said Heather Cavanaugh, Director Alaska Communications Corporate Communications.

Technicians fixed the issue as of 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to Cavanaugh. She says Alaska Communications understands people’s frustrations and apologizes for the inconvenience.
