An upper level low that's been lingering over the Alaska Panhandle is moving out of the way. A shortwave associated with this system over the Copper River Basin is responsible for the snowfall on Wednesday. Reports of 4+ inches of snow around Copper Center this morning. Glennallen also reporting 2+ inches of snow. Highs today should get rid of most of it with Glennallen looking for a high near 50 degrees. Still rain showers in Southeast. A jet streak just off the west coast of the state is steering a low into Bristol Bay and bringing another shot of cold air to the Alaska Peninsula.

One area of low pressure is centered over Northwest Alaska.  Snow showers are working their way over the Interior and Southcentral.  Most of the snow activity is scattered and light, so accumulations should not exceed an inch or two.  What is left of the upper jet ahead of this low is streaming through Southeast.  Rain will continue for all areas, with gusty winds near Juneau. Meanwhile, all eyes in the West turn to the Bering, where yet another strong storm system is gathering strength.  The Aleutians will feel the affects of this storm today.  Rain could be heavy and southerly winds will reach 60 mph.   By late tonight, snow and rain will increase along the coast and progress it's way inland.  Warmer air will surge northward along a strong jet, changing snow to all rain around Bristol Bay and the Alaska Peninsula.

A large upper level ridge has settled over the state providing sunshine and warming temperatures to all of the Interior and Southcentral regions.  Highs will range from the upper 60s around Fairbanks to the 50s around PWS and coastal Kenai Peninsula. Behind the ridge is a weak upper trough and surface disturbance.  It is nearly stationary over the Aleutian Islands.  A front is swinging through the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island this morning.  Along and behind it, rain showers have increased.  Rain is likely from Bristol Bay to Kodiak west into the Aleutians.  As a result, highs will stay in the 40s for most areas.

Very little change from yesterday to report. Rain becomes likely in the southern Panhandle thanks to a low pressure system that is moving northward into the eastern Gulf of Alaska today.  Gray skies and showers remain over the northern Panhandle this morning. Highs will be back into the upper 40s and 50s in SE. Rain is likely in PWS and the eastern Kenai Peninsula.  Highs will reach the upper 40s to near 50.  Mild temps and mostly cloudy skies are back for Anchorage, the Mat Su, Kenai and Soldotna.  Expect highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. The warmest weather will be along the middle and upper Susitna Valley, where mid 50s will be widespread.

We tend to think of Memorial Day weekend as the first unofficial weekend of summer but we're not seeing a summery blast across much of the state.  An area of low pressure is south of the Alaska Peninsula. The jet stream is south of the state and guiding that system into the Gulf of Alaska.  With the flow of the jet going almost due east, the push from this system won't send much rain too far inland.  Coastal areas can expect to see the brunt of this rain. Mostly cloudy and scattered rain showers through the weekend for Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valleys and the Kenai Peninsula.

The flood warning on the Kuskokwim River near Aniak has been extended until 10 p.m. Tuesday. An ice jam has formed about 10 miles down river near Crow Village. Water levels will continue to rise until the ice jam releases. As for the rest of the state, conditions remain fairly consistent on May 8. A weakening area of low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska continues to create rain showers in Southeast. Convection from two different lows wills keep the showers going through this evening but they are expected to end by Wednesday.

A report released by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Tuesday, which investigated the March 2010 wolf attack that killed a school teacher near the village of Chignik Lake on the Alaska Peninsula, found no evidence that the animals were habituated to humans or were defending food. “It does appear that the wolves were healthy -- not predisposed to aggressive behavior through most of the normal scenarios people think of when they think of wolves being aggressive,” said Lem Butler, Fish and Game Wildlife Biologist.
