Alaska State Troopers have arrested a 25-year-old Noorvik man for his alleged willingness to not only punch a man with glasses, but also kick him in the face during a drunken assault Saturday. According to an AST dispatch, Emmanuel Adams was intoxicated in Noorvik -- a dry village -- when he assaulted the victim. He was also on probation and parole for a prior offense, the conditions of which forbade him from violating laws as well as consuming alcohol. Kotzebue troopers headed to Noorvik Sunday to investigate the incident.

Alaska State Troopers arrested a total of 65 people for DUIs during three weeks of holiday enforcement efforts, concluding a campaign that ran from Dec. 12. to Jan. 1. According to AST spokesperson Megan Peters, the 63 misdemeanor and two felony DUI arrests came during statewide efforts that also saw 57 drivers charged with driving with suspended or revoked licenses. Troopers determined that an additional 267 drivers who were contacted under the Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately program were not intoxicated.

Alaska State Troopers have identified the trooper involved in a Wasilla shooting early Saturday morning that remains under investigation. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says Trooper David Eastwood-Kolezar of the Palmer post fired one round at 56-year-old Russell W. Tanner, after he and his wife had both reported a home-invasion robbery at their Wolverine Avenue residence. When troopers arrived at the scene, shortly after 12:30 a.m., they heard gunfire within the residence, then saw Tanner leaping from a second-story balcony carrying a firearm.

Alaska State Troopers say a Selawik man was killed in a snowmachine crash on Sunday on the Selawik River. According to troopers, 42-year-old Douglas Brown Sr. was driving his Polaris 550 at a high rate of speed on the Selawik River when he struck a stick attached to a fishing net around 11:50 a.m. Sunday. Brown was thrown from the snowmachine and it rolled on top of him, and a health arrived on scene and started CPR. Brown was transported to the Selawik Clinic and declared dead at noon Sunday.

An Iditarod Air Force plane crashed Tuesday afternoon during a takeoff from the race's checkpoint in the town of Iditarod, with Alaska State Troopers reporting that both the pilot and her passenger were uninjured. According to a Wednesday AST dispatch, Aniak-based Alaska Wildlife Troopers landing in Iditarod at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday noticed a Cessna 185 on its back near a ski strip at the race checkpoint. Troopers learned that the IAF plane's pilot, 57-year-old Chugiak woman Diane Moroney, had left the scene of the crash before they arrived.

April 15 is still Tax Day across the U.S., but another deadline set to fall on the same day -- Alaska's date for the removal of studded tires from motor vehicles -- is now three weeks away throughout the state. According to a Tuesday statement from Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Beth Ipsen, an emergency order from Department of Public Safety Commissioner Joe Masters has extended the deadline to May 1 for all roads in Alaska, due to recent snow and road conditions. Under state law roads north of 60 degrees latitude, as well as the Sterling Highway, always fall under the May 1 deadline.

STORY UPDATED AT 7:52 p.m. at 5/19/13: Alaska State Troopers say weather continues to hamper the search for two snowmachiners near Kotzebue. Shallain Adams, 23 of Noorvik, and Clifford Griest, 32 of Selawik, left Kotzebue early Wednesday morning on a black Polaris IQ snowmachine destined for Selawik. Over 70 searchers from Kotzebue, Selawik, Noorvik, Kiana, Noatak and Buckland have been involved in the ground search, but “efforts have been hampered by periodic bad weather. On Saturday, an Alaska wildlife trooper flew for a couple of hours before fog and blowing snow turned the pilot back.

A Palmer man is in critical condition after an all-terrain vehicle crash near the Old Glenn Highway early Wednesday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Wednesday AST dispatch says the crash, in an area near the highway south of Maud Road, was reported to troopers just after 4:10 a.m. “EMS responded to the scene of the reported crash and contacted the driver of an overturned four-wheeler, identified as Jorden Bishop, age 25 of Palmer,” troopers wrote. “Bishop, who was the only one involved in the ATV crash, was ambulatory at the time troopers arrived on scene and was transported by EMS to Mat-Su Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries.” AST spokesperson Megan Peters says that although Bishop's condition subsequently deteriorated, he appeared to be in better shape shortly after the crash.

A nine-year-old boy riding a snowmachine Saturday afternoon fell into into a crevasse in the Arctic Man races near the Hoodoo Mountains and is presumed dead, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers say that Shjon Brown, (first name pronounced “Shawn,”) of Fairbanks, was riding about five miles northwest of Arctic Man and fell into a crevasse about 200 feet deep around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. He was wearing a helmet and goggles at the time of the incident. “It's presumed that the child is deceased underneath the snowmachine underneath the snow,” Megan Peters, Alaska State Troopers, spokesperson said.
