A 5-year-old Mountain Village girl died Monday afternoon in a shooting by her older brother, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Tuesday AST dispatch says troopers from St. Mary's responded at about 2:20 p.m. Monday to the shooting. “Investigation revealed that an 8-year-old boy was playing with a Ruger 10/22 (rifle) that he had used the day before to go hunting, when he shot his 5-year-old sister, killing her,” troopers wrote. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says troopers can't or won't release many details about the shooting, which remains under investigation.

An Aniak man faces manslaughter and DUI charges in the death of a 15-year-old boy during a Thursday night snowmachine crash, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Friday AST dispatch says 26-year-old Philip Simeon told troopers in Aniak just before 9:45 p.m. about the crash, which occurred near the west end of the runway at the Aniak State Airport. An Alaska Wildlife Trooper and members of the Aniak Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene. “Investigation revealed that Simeon had been driving a snowmachine across a ditch with open water,” troopers wrote.

A Wasilla man was seriously injured early Wednesday morning when he was ejected from his car in a single-vehicle rollover crash, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Thursday AST dispatch says troopers responded at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday to Johnson's Road near Dawn Lake, where 22-year-old Robert Mackie had been headed south at the wheel of a 1987 Acura Integra. “Mackie lost control of the vehicle and rolled several times,” troopers wrote. “Mackie was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injury.”  Mackie was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, where he was listed in serious condition Thursday.

A Fort Wainwright soldier struck by a truck hauling logs in a January Richardson Highway crash at a lodge near Salcha died of his injuries Wednesday, according to the Army. U.S. Army Alaska spokesperson John Pennell says Spc. Zachary New, 21, died at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Affairs Hospital's Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center in San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, reporting to Fort Wainwright in October 2010 and deploying with the unit to Afghanistan from April 2011 to April 2012.

Alaska State Troopers say a school bus that was struck in a Mat-Su Valley crash Thursday afternoon, injuring six people including five children, had its lights flashing and its stop sign deployed when it was rear-ended. In a Monday AST dispatch, troopers say they responded just before 4:20 p.m. Thursday to the crash, which occurred when a First Student bus carrying elementary-aged children headed north on Knik-Goose Bay made a stop at its intersection with Country Lane. “Lisa D. Gettman, age 59 of Anchorage, who was operating her 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, drove up behind the bus and rear ended the school bus at a high rate of speed,” troopers wrote.

A Quinhagak snowmachiner was found dead of apparent hypothermia Wednesday after his snowmachine drove into a lead of open water, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Friday AST dispatch says a Bethel trooper were sent to Quinhagak to investigate the death of 52-year-old Wilbur Small. A village public safety officer told troopers just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday that Small's body had been located on the Quinhagak-Eek snowmachine trail. “(Small's) snow machine was also found about 500 feet away, submerged up to the cowling, in a creek north of Quinhagak,” troopers wrote.

Knik-Goose Bay Road has reopened after three people, including two children, were injured in a Mat-Su Valley crash Thursday afternoon involving a school bus, according to Alaska State Troopers. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says the extent of injuries sustained by the children, as well as the driver of a PT Cruiser that rear-ended the school bus near Knik-Goose Bay Road's intersection with Country Lane, remains unclear. A nine-year-old boy riding a snowmachine Saturday afternoon fell into into a crevasse in the Arctic Man races near the Hoodoo Mountains and is presumed dead, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers say that Shjon Brown, (first name pronounced “Shawn,”) of Fairbanks, was riding about five miles northwest of Arctic Man and fell into a crevasse about 200 feet deep around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. He was wearing a helmet and goggles at the time of the incident. “It's presumed that the child is deceased underneath the snowmachine underneath the snow,” Megan Peters, Alaska State Troopers, spokesperson said.
