The price of gas is slowly rising in Anchorage. According to gasbuddy.com, the price of a gallon of gasoline crawled up nine-tenths of a cent last week, to an average of $3.37. Nationally, gas rose just six-tenths of a penny to average $2.75 per gallon. In Anchorage, the price of a gallon of gas is $0.41 higher than it was this time a year ago.

Anchorage police detectives have identified the suspect in a murder that took place at the Millennium Hotel in the Spenard area of Anchorage. Using fingerprints, police identified Javier Antonio Martinez, 47, as the suspect in the murder of Milennium Hotel Supervisor Kerry Fadely, 55, that took place on Oct. 29th. Martinez is a convicted felon who has been previously deported by immigration officials. A grand jury indicted Martinez for murder in the first degree on Tuesday.

Spring cleaning started Saturday in Anchorage. The Anchorage Chamber's Citywide Clean-Up Week kicked off with Super Sweeper Saturday. Students from more than 80 schools in the district spent the day picking up trash around their schools and neighborhoods. The Super Sweeper program kicks off the start of clean-up week, which draws hundreds of volunteers. "Our community gets pretty gross over the years and I think it just makes it look a lot nicer when people are out here picking up stuff and putting it away, so all you see is the green," said Dimond High School sophomore Mackenzie French.

by Channel 2 News staff Saturday, February 6, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Heavy snowfall caused some messy conditions on Anchorage roads Saturday. The Anchorage Police Department warns drivers to take it slow and be extremely careful out on the roads. Police have responded to a number of traffic calls Saturday, including a six car tangle-up between the Dowling Road and Dimond Boulevard exits on the Seward Highway that slowed down traffic. Police say no one was injured, but the icy roads contributed to the back-up.

Alaska was represented well at the 115th Boston Marathon on Monday, a race notable for record speed across the board. Jerome Ross of Anchorage clocked the 37th-fastest time among all men, in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 32 seconds, to lead a group of runners from the 49th state. Tom Ritchie, also from Anchorage, came across in 2:34:29, good for the next-fastest time by an Alaskan. Douglas runner Hilary Young led the charge of Alaskan women, finishing in 3:14:38. Her time was enough for 376th position in the women's division.

by The Associated Press Tuesday, April 27, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The manager of the nation's second-highest volume cargo airport says new stopovers and rising demand for fuel may be signs of an economic upswing. Manager John Parrott of Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport says the latest sign is the return of Cargolux Airlines, a Luxembourg-based cargo carrier. Cargolux began twice weekly refueling stops in Anchorage on April 15, the first in five years.

The second Olive Garden Restaurant will open its doors to the public on October 29 at 11:00 a.m. The new Olive Garden is located in the Dimond Center where O'Brady's Burgers & Brew used to be. by Channel 2 News staff Monday, January 25, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- An Anchorage company is getting a big grant to expand Internet access in Southwest Alaska. United Utilities won the $88 million stimulus grant. The company will provide broadband Internet access to 65 communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay region. Sen. Mark Begich says the expansion of Internet access through the stimulus funds will improve telemedicine, improve distance learning, create needed jobs and allow Alaska small businesses to grow and expand.

Average gasoline prices in Anchorage have risen two cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.37 per gallon Sunday. The national average increased almost four cents per gallon in the last week, bringing the national average to $2.73 a gallon. Sunday's prices were almost 50 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago.
