Two Anchorage residents were sentenced by the state Thursday for an attack on an Alaska Native man in 2008. Robert Gum and Deanna Powers will spend 180 days behind bars for assault and harassment. The two were charged in state and federal court for harassing and assaulting a homeless man by throwing eggs at him, yelling racial slurs and threatening him with a baseball bat. The two videotaped the attack and posted it on YouTube. Both said the attack was racially motivated. In federal court, the two were convicted of felony civil rights violations.

by Channel 2 News staff Monday, April 26, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A man accused of repeatedly punching and kicking a man in a popular park changed his plea Monday. Nicholas Kozorra, 20, pleaded guilty to assault and robbery for the attack that happened in February. A judge sentenced him to time served and probation. Police say Kozorra and two other men had been drinking and saw Robert Estes by himself in Town Square Park. The beating put Estes in the hospital, and he has since recovered.

by Megan Baldino and Channel 2 News staff Wednesday, June 16, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska – One day after a biker was attacked by a protective brown bear near Rover's Run Trail, Mayor Dan Sullivan questioned the rehabilitation of salmon streams in Anchorage. The most recent project is at Westchester Lagoon, to restore what was once a natural run of salmon in Chester Creek. Sullivan says he's concerned about people's safety in what should be an urban environment.

Samuel Gottsegen, a 17 year old from Denver, was walking through the tall brush and trees in the Talkeetna Mountains in Alaska when a wild, snarling grizzly bear attacked. Not once, but twice the bear attacked Gottsegen for about two minutes this past Saturday night. "I can remember this moment when it bit down on my head," said Gottsegen who's now recovering at a hospital in Anchorage, "and I was just thinking I'm going, to die. I kept saying I'm going to die, I'm going to die, I'm going to die. " The attack came as the group of seven teenagers, including Gottsegen, was nearing the end of the 30-day survival course.

by Channel 2 News staff Tuesday, March 23, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- An Anchorage jury has convicted a 25-year-old Anchorage man of attempted sexual assault and assault after he attacked a woman jogging on the Westchester Lagoon trail in July of 2008. Michael Nyako now faces 39 to 99 years in prison for the attack. Prosecutor Brittany Dunlop said the woman targeted by Nyako tried to fight him off as he dragged her into a secluded place off the popular path.

When you first meet 66-year-old Donald "Skip" Sanford, it's hard to see how much he's been through these past two months. “From the outside, the hair and the clothes cover all the scars, so it's kind of like nobody knows,” said Sanford.   They're scars that show an incredible story of survival that starts with a moose hunting trip in mid-September. Sanford and his 12-year-old son John, and his friend Monty Dyson and his son Chad, were hunting in an area 50 miles west of Paxon.

Just as 9-11 ushered in the war on terror, the attack on Pearl Harbor ushered in World War II 60 years earlier. Just before the attack, as Alaska fortified its coast against the Japanese, four army fireman died as they attempted to put out a grass fire at Fort Ray, near Sitka. "The grass fire spread to a dynamite and munitions dump, and the fire department responded,” said Mark Barker Chair of the Alaskan Fallen Firefighter Committee.  “When they got there, the ammunition dump exploded killing all four firefighters, and two other military personnel.

A young man charged with a brutal stabbing attack at Service High School in 2009, faced a judge Friday morning to plead guilty to attempted murder in the first degree and third-degree assault. Nicholas Chamberlain is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, Lori Miebs, 29 times on school grounds. Police say he led her into the woods, promising a surprise, but then attacked her, stabbing her repeatedly with a small knife. He stopped once to change out a bent blade. The attack ended when bystanders came to her aid. On Friday, nearly three years after the crime, Miebs sat in court surrounded by her family.

In September, Chamberlain pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree attempted murder and third-degree assault. Judge Michael Wolverton handed down a 60-year sentence with 20 years suspended on the murder charge, as well as a two-year sentence on the assault charge. Prosecutors say Chamberlain lured Miebs into woods near Service High by promising her a surprise, then started stabbing her -- at least 76 times, according to Miebs -- in an attack that saw him stop once to change blades after one got bent.

An Iditarod musher is fighting to save the life of one of his sled dogs, after it attacked and seriously injured a 2-year-old girl Friday. The incident happened at Apex Kennels, the Big Lake dog yard belonging to musher Jake Berkowitz. According to Alaska State Troopers, the dog attacked the toddler, Elin Shuck, until the girl's mother was able to pull it away. Shuck was taken to Providence Hospital for treatment of injuries to her neck and jugular vein. On Thursday, the Shuck family's attorney declined to comment on the incident.

Former state Sen. Albert Kookesh has been taken to Anchorage after suffering a heart attack Monday morning. Kookesh was hospitalized at Providence Alaska Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Monday afternoon. Hospital officials say he is listed in critical condition. According to Kookesh's daughter, Elaine Kookesh, most of the blockage was removed during the procedure. He is expected to be in recovery for five to six days. Kookesh was a Democratic state senator from Angoon, and currently chairs the Sealaska Corp.'s board of directors.

Anchorage Police said they had to protect themselves by shooting a pit bull after the owner released the dog to attack officers serving a warrant.  “The dog may have been a perfectly nice dog under most circumstances," said Lt. Dave Parker with APD, "but the circumstances under which the officers were presented required that they protect themselves.” Pit bull lovers want to inform the public that this incident doesn't reflect on the breed. ...

Two men were attacked by a bear Saturday along the Kenai River, according to Alaska Fish & Game. One of the victims suffered severe injuries and is recovering in an Anchorage hospital. According to Jeff Selinger, the Kenai area wildlife biologist, the two men were setting up a trap line about a half mile upstream from the Kenai Keys area, on the south side of the Kenai River. They separated and were working to set some traps when the bear attacked.  Selinger said “one individual heard his partner screaming and heard a bear roaring, and ran over to investigate and saw a bear attacking his partner.

Kimya Jafroudi delivered six of the Seawolves' 14 aces as the UAA volleyball team shook off an opening game loss to St. Martin's to knock off the Saints in four games, 23-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15.  The Seawolves improve to 13 and 5 overall and 8 and 2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, tied for second place. Katelynn Zanders led a balanced attack with 17 kills, while fellow freshmen Julia Mackey and Sarah Johnson contributed 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Jodi Huddleston added 10 kills.

A Seattle college student, who works as a geological engineer, escaped death at the hands of a Grizzly bear over the weekend. 20-year-old Julia Stafford and a colleague were taking soil samples in a ravine near Paxson, near the Richardson Highway.   Stafford and her colleague spotted the bear, and got into a crouched position, but it was too late. “The bear started walking towards us, then running towards us, then it jumped on us,” said Stafford.  “He grabbed me by the hand and dragged me 20 feet down the rocks,” The bear let go of Stafford and took off.  She was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, and is expected to get further treatment on the hand in Seattle.
