A Barrow man is facing attempted-murder charges after allegedly firing a shotgun at a pickup truck Sunday morning, according to North Slope Borough police. Officers responded to reports of gunshots near Egasak Street in Barrow shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday. “Preliminary investigation revealed Barrow resident Akugaq Ben Asisaun Leavitt, age 28, had discharged at least one round from a 20 gauge shotgun striking a pickup truck occupied by three Barrow residents, none of whom were reported to have been injured,” officers wrote in a statement on the case Monday.

North Slope Borough police shot and injured a man in Barrow Wednesday morning who threatened to shoot himself and police officers responding to a domestic-violence incident. Officers were called at about 5:07 a.m. to 1663 Okpik St. where the suspect, a 31-year-old man, had left the scene. He subsequently returned with a firearm, which he pointed at himself while threatening to shoot himself. Police ordered the man to put down the weapon, but he didn't do so. When he pointed the gun at officers, one of them shot him, inflicting a non-lethal wound to his arm and shoulder.

A Barrow couple has been indicted by a grand jury on charges including manslaughter in last month's death of a 3-year-old girl, one of two girls who were trapped overnight in a bedroom with a window open to temperatures of 30 degrees below zero. North Slope Borough police say Richard Tilden Jr. and Esther Edwards-Gust, both 28, are charged with criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter and second-degree assault. Tilden also faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and first-degree assault.

A feature film starring an Eskimo cast and shot in Alaska is set to open Friday. "On The Ice," a fictional story about young teenagers from Barrow involved in a murder fueled by crystal meth , was shot entirely on location in Barrow over 25 days. The thriller was written and directed by Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, who grew up in Barrow and Fairbanks, and was co-produced by his wife Cara Marcous. Maclean says the story's setting makes a smooth transition from reality to film. “It looks really good on screen.

After the death of a three year-old Barrow girl from what police say was a domestic violence incident, a small group of women in the community wanted to take a public stand against domestic violence. Stefanie Lozano, Heather Lemen, Marlana Peidlow, Nordel Sundai and Andrea Kanayurak decided to distribute purple ribbons all over town in memory of the child. They say they received so much support from the community, that the mayor's office organized a "Walk for Hope. "   The event was held Friday night, and about 100 people participated to raise awareness about domestic violence and abuse.

Two Barrow girls who were medevaced to Anchorage last week before one of them died had been left in a bedroom with an open window overnight, exposing them to outside temperatures of -30 degrees Fahrenheit, according to charging documents filed against their mother. Esther Edwards-Gust and her boyfriend Richard Tilden Jr., both 28, are each charged with two felony counts of domestic-violence assault in the Feb. 2 incident. North Slope Borough police responded that evening to a call about a 3-year-old who wasn't breathing at the couple's apartment, on the 200 block of Momeganna Street.

One of two Barrow children who were severely assaulted Thursday night and medevaced to Anchorage died Saturday, as North Slope Borough police arrested a man accused of illegally selling alcohol to a suspect in the death. Officials say the 3-year-old assault victim was reported dead at the Alaska Native Medical Center at about 3 p.m. Saturday. There was no update on the condition of a 1-year-old child who was also medevaced after the assault. North Slope Borough police officers responded Thursday to a report that the 3-year-old wasn't breathing, at an apartment on the 200 block of Momeganna Street.

Two Barrow children have medevaced to Anchorage after being assaulted at an apartment where a 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime Thursday night. North Slope Borough Police Department officers responded to a 911 call requesting an ambulance at an apartment building on the 200 block of Momeganna Street for a child who was not breathing. Responders found a 3-year-old child who didn't have a pulse and wasn't breathing, as well as a 1-year-old in need of emergency medical attention.

A Barrow man was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Monday after allegedly shooting two adults on Saturday morning, according to the North Slope Borough Police Department. Witnesses told Barrow police that 20-year-old Dave A. Evikana entered a residence at 7724 Yugik Street in Barrow around 3:24 a.m. on Saturday and fired four rounds from a handgun. According to witnesses, Evikana fled the scene on a black and yellow Ski-doo snow machine. Police found 26-year-old Sean Z. Gunnells with a gunshot wound to his lower right leg and 20-year-old Jasmine J. Dunbar with a superficial gunshot wound to her lower left leg. Gunnells and Dubar were taken to Samuel Simmons Memorial Hospital and were treated and released.

North Slope Borough Police are looking for a suspect who they believe shot two people Saturday.      Chief of Police for the North Slope Borough Police Department Leon Boyea says two individuals were shot early this morning at a residence in Barrow and were treated at a hospital. They are looking for a man in his 20s. He was last seen wearing all black. Police ask if you have any information to call the North Slope Borough Police dispatch at 907-852-6111.
