by Channel 2 News staff Saturday, March 20, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Police say a teenager in Barrow stabbed his 16-year-old girlfriend and himself Friday afternoon. The North Slope Borough Police Department says the suspect, also 16, was found hiding inside his home after the stabbing at about 5:30 p.m. Both he and his girlfriend were taken to a Barrow hospital and later brought to Anchorage's Alaska Native Medical Center for treatment. The teen has been charged with attempted murder and assault.

The northernmost city in the United States had 60.2 inches of snow last year, making it the sixth snowiest year on record. Six of the 10 snowiest years in Barrow have occurred within the last 20 years, including a record 66 inches in 2008. Despite the snow, Barrow also enjoyed its sixth warmest year on record. The average temperature was 13.6 degrees, 3.2 degrees above normal.

Location and Climate Barrow, the northernmost community in North America, is located on the Chukchi Sea coast, 10 miles south of Point Barrow from which it takes its name. It lies 725 air miles from Anchorage. The community lies at approximately 71.290560° North Latitude and -156.788610° West Longitude. (Sec. 06, T022N, R018W, Umiat Meridian.) Barrow is located in the Barrow Recording District. The area encompasses 18.4 sq. miles of land and 2.9 sq. miles of water. The climate of Barrow is arctic.
