Bonnie Achman has made a living out of gold. Years ago, her husband Sam called her with news. He had purchased gold claims near Chicken, Alaska- a place Bonnie had never even heard of. They were about thirty miles outside of Chicken on Jack Wade Creek. During the couple's mining years, there were some big gold finds but the largest happened in 1983- and is still very special to Bonnie.

by Jason Lamb Tuesday, February 23, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- While most restaurant owners in Anchorage do a fine job running their establishments, city reports show a few in town have fallen short when it comes to the health and safety of the food you eat. From filthy food surfaces to rodent droppings all over the kitchen, the horror stories can be pretty disgusting. For a break during lunch you might try the Sushi Ya Japanese restaurant on Dimond. Its easily-accessible location attracts dozens of diners every day. But the city's health inspections database shows the restaurant received several critical violations back in September.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a big pregnant lady plus I love food -- it's a dangerous combination. Like all good plans I decided to met a friend for lunch at Spenard Roadhouse, but work got in the way and I had to get everything to-go. I've eaten at the Roadhouse often; it's kind of my go-to place.

He's recommended a Lunchbox stop for months now, and this week I finally took his advice. Hula Hands Polynesian Restaurant is a small chain in Southcentral Alaska, with two locations in Anchorage and one in Wasilla, but I didn't realize until recently that one of those Anchorage locations was in Midtown.

The state Department of Transportation says more convoys are planned for parts of the washed-out Taylor Highway. Much of the road between Chicken and Eagle has been closed for the past month after heavy flooding caused more than $6 million in damage to the roadway, forcing Gov. Sean Parnell to declare the area a disaster. Beginning Friday, pilot cars will begin leading people from Chicken to the junction of the Top of the World Highway at Milepost 95, which leads to Dawson City in Canada.

Midtown and Spenard have seen review waves, and most recently Downtown is taking a turn in the spotlight. The Teriyaki Box is an unassuming log-cabin structure at the corner of 4th Avenue and I Street, just south of the city's state and federal courthouses.
