Fire fighters say they're starting to “roll into longer and more frequent wildfires,” due to the recent trend of dry conditions along with the typical lightening season, some human caused fires and a delayed “green-up.” There were 39 active wildfires as of Saturday afternoon, according to the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center. The Alaska Division of Forestry says there were more than a dozen fires in the Interior, near McGrath and Tok. “This is the time of year when we get a little thin on resources and have to prioritize,” said Norm McDonald, Fire Management Officer with AK Division of Forestry, Mat-Su Area.

The Municipality of Anchorage has crews out sweeping up gravel left over from the winter nearly 24-hours a day and crews could still on the streets for another eight weeks, according to Street Maintenance Foreman Paul Vanlandingham. He says approximately 10,000 pounds of gravel was scattered on city streets, to give drivers traction, and now they have to pick it all up. Vanlandingham says it's a big task and mother nature isn't helping. "The last snowfall we got here a couple weeks ago put us back 10 days to a couple weeks but we are in full sweep mode now," said Vanlandingham.

The recent meltdown of snow has created numerous issues. The thaw-and-freeze cycle breaks up asphalt, so the potholes are getting larger. Water is "ponding" because there is no place for the runoff to go. Many storm drains around the city are clogged with ice and miscellaneous debris. Crews are working over the next two weeks to remedy the problem, but until then, motorists and pedestrians will need to be cautious of large cracks and holes where the roads are dry and of areas of deep water at intersections and in neighborhoods.

As the streets continue to thaw out, drivers will try to dodge those pesky potholes. Street maintenance crews are working on removing snow from the streets and unclogging storm drains, so the water can flow through. The Municipality of Anchorage has 1,400 miles of roads to maintain, but officials say they do rely on the public's help to point out the trouble spots. If you see a pothole, the Muni encourages you to call the pothole hotline at 343-MEND (6363). Crews aim to have it repaired within 24 hours of the report.

Brian Balega, a fire investigator with the department, says none of the usual causes of residential fires in occupied buildings were present during Monday's blaze.
