In the wake of 2 boating accidents on the Eagle River this summer, the Anchorage Fire Department is issuing a warning to those who use the river: Always wear a life jacket. That reminder comes after a Wasilla mother's life was -- in all probability --- saved by her life vest, wet suit and helmet when she was ejected from her raft over the weekend (Saturday). Young Mark Patrick, of Palmer, dove into the water after his mother after she was thrown from their raft. It came to a sudden stop in the swift current when it got hung-up on a rock formation called, "The Dragon's Teeth.

A kayaker was rescued from Eagle River, after his kayak became pinned aganst a log, according to the Anchorage Fire Department. Crews responded at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday when they received word of the pinned kayaker in the high and fast-running water. Rescue crews staged at the Eagle River Campground. They say the water was so forceful that they had to saw away the kayak in order to free the man. When he was pulled from the river, his core body temperature had dropped, according to rescuers.

A Eagle River log home went up in flames Saturday morning on Hiland Road. All of the people inside made it out of the home, but two dogs died in the blaze. Crews from Anchorage, Eagle River, and Chugiak responded to the fire. Anchorage Batallion Chief Kevin Keene says an off-duty firefighter reported the fire, which helped with response times. "He called the fire in and we got a quick response from Eagle River. It is a time-consuming drive up here for us, being five miles up in the mountains," Keene said.

Authorities are investigating the death of a Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson soldier at his Eagle River home early Sunday morning. Army officials say the soldier, who was part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, was found unresponsive by his wife late Saturday night, who then called 911. Responders performed CPR on the soldier, but he was declared dead at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. The cause of the soldier's death is unknown, and his name has not yet been released.

State troopers say they have positively identified the remains of a body found at the mouth of Mission Creek. The state medical examiner's office confirmed that the remains are those of U.S. Customs agent Charles Collins of Eagle River. Collins, 56, went missing on July 13 while he was on duty operating a government vehicle. The vehicle had gone off the road near Mile 114 of the Taylor Highway during heavy flooding and was found submerged in O'Brien Creek. Collins had been considered missing since that time.

Onlookers lined the streets of downtown Eagle River for Saturday's main event, the Bear Paw Festival Grand Parade. Other highlights included the 5K Bear Paw Classic, Slippery Salmon Olympics and Midnight Sun Cloggers. Food, music and the Golden Wheel Carnival are all big parts of the festival for people of all ages.

The family of a man who was beaten to death last month is taking steps to remember him, even as they mourn his loss. Harvey “Charley” Albright’s family says a memorial for him is being organized this weekend. Albright, 23, was reported missing at the end of August. Detectives suspected foul play, and found his body a week later on a riverbank. According to court documents, Albright was beaten to death at an Eagle River home by three men, who are in custody and charged with his murder.

Every year, the first high-school football games in the nation kick off in Alaska. It all begins Friday, and several area teams are stepping up their game in anticipation. Last year, Eagle River made steps from a fledgling Cook Inlet Conference bottom-feeder to a legitimate contender. The Wolves won three games -- including their first two ever in conference play. Eagle River brings back a host of hungry returning players, but second-year head coach Kenny Ray won't get caught up with certain styles that are in vogue in today's game.
