AnchorRides announced its providing core service only on Thursday, Feb. 9 due to icy road conditions. Eagle River and outlying areas are canceled due to the winter road conditions. On Feb. 3, AnchorRides performed essential and return trips only due to a heavy snow advisory.

The Salvation Army enlisted the help of local groups, charities, and volunteers to distribute thousands of holiday gifts to families in need in Anchorage. On Saturday, the “Neighborhood GIFT” program had five distribution sites spread across Anchorage and Eagle River. The Salvation Army estimated at least 5,000 families received a festive holiday food box and about 12,000 children went home with a new toy, thanks to the program. Families were able to stop by any one of the five locations in Anchorage.

Two young girls were severely injured by a moose today at an Eagle River playground. The attack happened on Sokolof Circle in the Eaglewood Subdivison, According to Anchorage Police   Department spokesman Lt. Dave Parker. An 11-year-old  suffered head injuries, and a 6-year-old has injuries to her arms. Police say the girls took cover under playground equipment until helped arrived.

Water ways have become increasingly dangerous and the Anchorage Fire Department is urging people to take caution. Fast moving waters have moved huge trees and boulders in the Eagle River, causing changes to the banks. AFD officials say that even if you think you're familiar with an area to be careful because many banks are becoming undercut by swift moving water. The river already claimed two lives earlier this summer and rescue crews say there are no signs of the danger subsiding.

Funeral services have been set for three people killed in a plane crash near Rainy Pass earlier this week. On Mar. 5, rescue crews found the wreckage near the 4,000-foot level of Rainy Pass and found the bodies of pilot Ted Smith, 59 , and mother and daughter passengers Carolyn Sorvoja, 48, and Rosemarie Sorvoja , 10, all three were from Eagle River. Smith was a retired Anchorage Police Department Sergeant with other two decades of experience and his service will take place Saturday, Mar. 9. It will be held at the Central Lutheran Church at 1420 Cordova St at 3 p.m. A funeral mass for Carolyn and Rosemarie Sorvoja will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 16. It will be held at St. Andrews Parish at 16300 Domain Lane in Eagle River.

The Anchorage Police Department reports a missing elderly man was found alive in Eagle River Thursday. Police say they found 86-year-old Edgar Tamm submerged in water in a wooded area. Tamm, who has mild dementia, was reported missing Wednesday when he didn't come back after taking a walk. Tamm is originally from Estonia and is in Alaska visiting family. The Alaska State Troopers searched the area by helicopter and found him just past noon Thursday. Police say Tamm was taken to a medic and is now hospitalized.

The opening day of the Cook Inlet Conference Basketball tournament ended free of upsets, and largely free of drama. The day's only exciting quarterfinal was played between boys No. 2 seed Bartlett and seventh-seeded Chugiak. The Golden Bears trailed the Mustangs 35-34 in the third quarter before rallying with a 27-7 run. Bartlett held off Chugiak to win 66-53 and will meet either East or Service in the semifinals. In the other boys game, West received 23 points from Dominique Queen in an 83-44 blowout of Eagle River.

Service's 42-7 win over Dimond on Saturday was enough to put them at the top of this week's Alaska Sports Broadcasting Netowrk Football Poll. Chugiak jumped up to the number two spot from last week after stomping Eagle River 35-14. Juneau jumps into the poll as well with a 2-0 record.  South's riveting win agianst Bartlett on a late two-point conversion threw the Wolverines in the poll, while Bartlett's loss dropped the Golden Bears down from number one to number five.
