Hundreds of runners open their hearts Saturday in Girdwood as they race for the man critically injured at Mount Marathon this year. Matt Kenney is still recovery from a 30 foot fall down the mountain during that race last month. All of the funds raised at today's Alyeska Classic Mountain Run are going to medical bills for the Kenneys and people were eager to support that cause. Not every runner here knew Matt Kenney personally but still, what happened to Matt Kenney hit everyone in the running community on a personal level.

The Alaska SPCA says it plans to shut down its Midtown adoption center in April due to the condition of the building it's in, although a decision has yet to be made on whether to conduct repairs or move to a new location. Maureen O'Nell, the Alaska SPCA's executive director, says the group's adoption center at 7309 Arctic Blvd. has experienced a variety of plumbing and roofing problems over the years. A recent gas leak led to the discovery of severe corrosion in pipes, however, which prompted the group's board of directors to start considering a move.

I came to work last Monday and saw that various elements were coming together for a chance of late-season snow for Friday into Saturday. I asked myself, "Do I dare say anything?" "Can I wait another day and hope what I see just goes away?" "Maybe I can say something in passing and it won't be that big of a deal?" Yeah, right. Well, I did say something and I've said the same thing each morning this week: Rain becomes more steady and widespread Thursday night and Friday.

Alaska's former first daughter was cutting a rug Thursday night at Rum Runners Old Towne Bar in Downtown Anchorage. Bristol Palin and "Dancing With the Stars" partner Mark Ballas made a guest appearance at the bar. The two were in town rehearsing and traveling around the state. Ballas performed at the bar while “Entertainment Tonight” filmed a segment. According to Palin's Facebook page, the two also had dance practice at a studio in Wasilla. The two will perform again on Monday's episode of “Dancing with the Stars.

Austin, Texas police have confirmed the death of an Anchorage man found in a local creek last weekend. Austin police recovered the body of Cole Christianson from Shoal Creek, just behind the Austin Music Hall, after authorities received a call at about 11 a.m. Saturday. According to Christianson's Facebook page, he attended Dimond High School and was on track to graduate from the University of Alaska Anchorage in 2014. An investigation of Christianson's death has been completed, and police have ruled that it is not suspicious.

The sprawling green multiplex on Doris Street was designed to be a respite from psychiatric wards and institutions; a chance for young people diagnosed with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia to live in a place that was like a home, not a hospital, making choices for themselves.  “The message always is 'we are here to keep you safe,'” wrote Susan Musante, the site manager, in a fact sheet about Soteria House's philosophy.

Friends of Josh Jennett, owner of Josh Jennett's Jewelry Cache located on East Benson Blvd., hosted a silent auction and benefit yesterday to support their ailing friend. Jennett has been battling stage four liver and colon cancer. His friends held this auction to help him pay for his medical bills. Organizers of the auction came up with this simple saying to explain why individuals should donate: "Because it's Josh," they say. Friends say that Jennett was always helping others in the community.

The reward for finding a missing Fairbanks woman has increased from $500 to $2,000. According to the "Help Find Mary Ann Alexie" Facebook page, the reward increased on Monday. Alexie, 33, has been missing since October. She was last heard from on October 10 after she arrived in Anchorage to attend Alaska Career College. She was in Anchorage for one week before she went missing from the Spenard area. Alexie is described as 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs roughly 120 pounds.
