The University of Alaska Fairbanks is mourning the death of a student during a fieldwork project in Tanzanialast week. According to the university, Adrina Knutson of Copper Center was killed in an Aug. 5 vehicle crash. In a post on the UAF Center for Cross-Cultural Studies' Facebook page, College of Liberal Arts associate dean Anita Hartmann expressed her condolences for Knutson's death. "It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Adrina Knutson, a student many of you knew and worked with,” Hartmann wrote.

You can break the 2012 Iron Dog race down many ways, but the fact remains, it's team 17's race to lose at this point. Dusty VanMeter and Marc McKenna left Tanana at 8 a.m., followed by last year's champion Tyler Huntington and his new partner James 'Tre' West at 8:47 a.m. Ryan Sottasanti and Andrew Zwink, the thired team and eligable to leave at 8:54 a.m., were wrenching on their sleds in Tanana at the last report. According to many of the racers, the trail is hard and fast, and many teams are seeing new problems as they are traveling at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour at times.

Update: Update from City of Palmer: At 10 pm, residents may return to the Cedar Hills Subdivision without the need to show id. Please use care when driving as the firefighters will have their equipment in the area and will monitor the area throughout the night. Mat-Su Borough officials have called for the Cedar Hills subdivision and other areas to be evacuated after several homes caught fire in high winds Thursday, temporarily closing the Glenn Highway in the area.

by Rhonda McBride Tuesday, June 01, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Author Joe McGinnis lashed back at his new neighbor, former governor Sarah Palin Tuesday morning on NBC's "Today Show. " McGinnis insists he rented the home next door to Palin's house in Wasilla because it was a good deal at $1,500 a month.  "Today Show" host Matt Lauer asked him if, after getting death threats and accusations of being a stalker, he wished he had rented another house. McGinnis responded by saying no, because he's learned something important about Palin.

Anchorage businesses were slashing their prices and offering killer deals in an effort to promote "Small Business Saturday. "  "A lot of small businesses have things you can't buy at big stores," said Whitney Heskett, the Marketing Manager for Run to the Sun Tanning Salon and Resort Boutique. "There are a lot of benefits to why you should shop small on Small Business Saturday. " Run to the Sun started promoting its deals weeks ago on its Facebook page, as did other stores like Flypaper.

The driver police say hit two pedestrians with his truck early New Year's Day remains free, and has prompted many member of the public to ask why. Tex Daniels II, 21 of Chugiak, has not been arrested, and charges have not been filed.  "We know that it is frustrating to the public, but it takes time for the blood analysis," Anchorage Police Department Lt. Dave Parker said. At the time of the crash, investigators took a blood sample from Daniels and it was sent to the state crime lab, according to Parker.  "The blood is sent out also to see what might be on board and that is a very important point," Parker said.  Because the tests are looking for alcohol, legal and illegal drugs, results can take anywhere from six weeks to four months.

Update : Classes are back in session for the Anchorage School District and University of Alaska Anchorage for Thursday, September 6, according to spokespersons who confirmed with KTUU Channel 2 news. ASD said Chester Valley Elementary School will operate under a delayed start and will begin at 11 a.m. All other ASD schools are open and operating a normal schedule. " We know that some families are still without power. It is up to each family to decide what is best for them and whether their child can attend school.

The recent meltdown of snow has created numerous issues. The thaw-and-freeze cycle breaks up asphalt, so the potholes are getting larger. Water is "ponding" because there is no place for the runoff to go. Many storm drains around the city are clogged with ice and miscellaneous debris. Crews are working over the next two weeks to remedy the problem, but until then, motorists and pedestrians will need to be cautious of large cracks and holes where the roads are dry and of areas of deep water at intersections and in neighborhoods.

According to a Facebook post by sculptor Jordan Anderson, the stolen eagle carving was found at an address on Klatt Road, Monday night. No further details were immediately available. Anchorage Police say on Sunday someone stole a giant wooden carving of an eagle out of the bed of a truck sitting in the Lowe's home improvement store parking lot on O'Malley Road. Police say there is surveillance video of the theft. Anderson says he left the wooden eagle, which he was getting ready to deliver, in the bed of his truck for a mere eight minutes while he went into the Lowe's store to get supplies.
