A Fairbanks man was arrested late Monday afternoon after allegedly killing another Fairbanks man, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers responded to a disturbance around 4:46 p.m. on Lakeview Drive in Fairbanks and found 59-year-old David E. Schei with serious injuries. Schei was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and declared dead on arrival. AST said that 50-year-old Anthony W. Charleston, of Fairbanks, was at the scene of the disturbance and detained. Troopers interviewed Charleston and arrested and charged him with second-degree murder.

Carvers from Russia and Japan took top honors at the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks. Two carvers from Russia won the single block abstract division with their meteor sculpture. Teams consisting of one or two artists carved for up to 60 hours to create sculptures from a block of ice measuring 5 feet, by 8 feet, by 3 feet and weighing more than 7000 pounds. Carvers from Japan won the single block realistic division with their sculpture of a locust. Anonymous judges look at the pieces and determine their score based on creativity, presentation and technical criteria.

A fatal crash one week ago on the Parks Highway near Fairbanks is prompting safety concerns from some of its most frequent drivers, who say the area where it happened could use better state road maintenance. Alaska State Troopers say Fairbanks resident David Yudin, 21, was headed south on the afternoon of Feb. 20 when his Volkswagen sedan lost control on a curve at Mile 345 of the highway. Yudin slid into the oncoming lane, was struck by a tanker tractor-trailer and died at the scene.

Meet your new Iron Dog snowmachine race champions, the same as the old ones -- Marc McKenna and Dusty VanMeter of Team 17, who repeated their 2012 victory during a sunny finish in Fairbanks at 12:38 p.m. Saturday, having once again conquered more than 2,000 miles of trail. McKenna and VanMeter's win came on Ski-Doo sleds, with 36 hours, 58 minutes and 54 seconds of trail time. Their victory was threatened Friday by Team 23's Brian Dick and Eric Quam, who had closed the lead to only seven minutes of trail time, with race officials expecting the two teams to duel for position en route to Tanana.

The Parks Highway has been closed near Fairbanks Wednesday afternoon following a crash between a car and a semi truck that left the car's driver dead, according to Alaska State Troopers. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says troopers were informed of the crash, about 20 miles south of Fairbanks at Mile 345 of the Parks, just before 3:30 p.m. According to initial information the semi was headed north while the car was headed south, and the car lost control on a short curve before sliding into the oncoming lane.

In the past few weeks, an Internet trend has emerged where people wait for the bass to drop about 15 seconds into the 30 second video clips and “boom,” people start shaking. Racers will drive north through the Flood Project and onto the Chena River heading back toward downtown Fairbanks. A 54-year-old Fairbanks man was arrested early Wednesday in connection with a massive Sunday explosion that rocked a neighborhood of the Interior Alaska city and prompted a federal investigation, according to Alaska State Troopers. A criminal complaint filed in Fairbanks, where Guy Christopher Mannino was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, says he was taken into custody at Fairbanks International Airport shortly after 6:45 a.m. Wednesday by troopers and airport police.
