A new bill introduced this week by Sen. Mark Begich and Rep. Don Young fires a shot across the bow of pirate fishing, giving federal authorities several options to dispose of foreign vessels seized for that offense -- including sinking them in live-fire training exercises. If passed, the Pirate Fishing Vessel Disposal Act would also let the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and U.S. Coast Guard hand over foreign vessels seized during illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing to other governments to be used in fisheries enforcement.

A Coast Guard helicopter rescued two fishermen in Nushagak Bay at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter, along with an HC-130 Hercules, located and rescued the fishermen after they abandoned the 32-foot aluminum fishing vessel Intrepid. Update : On Tuesday night, Alaska State Troopers identified the man missing off a fishing boat near Skagway was 61-year-old Theodore Lynch, of Haines. Original : A Tuesday search has been suspended for a man who fell overboard from a fishing vessel near Skagway, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Klingenberg says watchstanders in Juneau received a call from a Skagway police officer Tuesday afternoon, reporting the man overboard from the 45-foot-long Darlin' Michelle.

by Channel 2 News staff Sunday, May 2, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A Coast Guard marine investigation says the October 2008 sinking of the Seattle-based fishing vessel Katmai was caused by overloading. The Seattle Times reports an excessively loaded hold, an unsecured door and the decision to push into a huge storm all contributed to the vessel's loss, in which seven crew members died. The Coast Guard's report recommends more training for fishing boat captains and crew, as well as mandatory inspections.

The Coast Guard rescued a man on a fishing vessel Saturday morning who apparently had shellfish poisoning. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Kodiak medevaced Jonathon Botz, 28, from the vessel Miss Michelle about 15 miles northwest of Kodiak. Botz was airlifted at about 6:45 a.m. after a crewmember of the vessel contacted the Coast Guard about the shellfish poisoning. The helicopter crew landed in Port Lions, then transported Botz to Kodiak. He was then taken to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center for treatment.

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search Thursday evening for a man overboard near an island south of Kodiak. Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says the unidentified crewman was reported overboard from the fishing vessel Flying Ocean, 30 miles northwest of Sitkinak Island, just before 11 a.m. Thursday. The search was suspended at 9:37 p.m. Coast Guard assets committed to the search included the cutter Hickory as well as two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and an HC-130 Hercules search plane.

by Channel 2 News staff Sunday, June 13, 2010 JUNEAU, Alaska -- A Washington man was killed attempting to secure a commercial fishing vessel to a dock in Juneau. Juneau police and Capital City Fire Rescue say 33-year-old Edgar Cedillo was caught between a fish tender and the dock and could not be revived. Officials said Sunday that the name of Cedillo's hometown was not immediately available. Emergency responders took a call at 2:25 a.m. Friday that a man was hurt and not breathing at a dock at Auke Bay, about 15 miles from downtown Juneau.

A search is under way for a crewman reported overboard near an island south of Kodiak while crab fishing Thursday, on the same morning that the U.S. Coast Guard rescued another fishing vessel's crew from the island after their vessel hit a rock. Coast Guard spokesperson Petty Officer 1st Class David Mosley says Anchorage watchstanders were notified of the man overboard at about 10:50 a.m. by the crew of the Flying Ocean, about 30 miles northwest of Sitkinak Island. The Coast Guard cutter Hickory is searching the fisherman's last known position, with support from an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules search aircraft.

The Coast Guard rescued three Seattle fishermen in the Aleutian Islands on late Sunday night after the crew's vessel went aground. Around 11:46 p.m. Sunday, the Neptune 1 crew reported an engine failure and caused the ship to drift ashore on the northwest side of Umnak Island. The crew issued a distress call and activated its emergency position initiating a radio beacon to help rescue crews find its location. The fishermen put on their survival suits and swam to shore. “The crew of the Neptune 1 took all the right steps to ensure their successful rescue, including the activation of their emergency beacon,” said Raymond Dwyer, District 17 Command Duty Officer.
