While basketball fans may be looking ahead to next week's Great Alaska Shootout, the University of Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team can't yet afford to -- as this weekend's home games versus New Mexico-Highlands are much more significant. If real estate is all about location, an NCAA playoff resume is built around the location of your opponents. “We put our schedule besides the Shootout to include the West Region, so they all count,” said coach Tim Moser.

The University of Alaska Anchorage says more than 1,500 people could receive free plane tickets in November -- funded by an appropriation from the state's capital budget -- from 18 Alaska cities to Anchorage with the purchase of tickets to the 35th annual Great Alaska Shootout. House Finance Committee co-chair Rep. Bill Stoltze's (R-Chugiak) office confirmed the source of the funds Friday afternoon. The committee's other co-chair, Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Haines), pushed for the $2.5 million appropriation to UAA. He said the money was meant to keep the Shootout alive, but didn't come with restrictions on what UAA could do with it. According to UAA, the complimentary tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to people who buy $127 general-admission ticket packages to the Shootout, which go on sale starting at 12:01 p.m. Wednesday.

Dartmouth College alumni are among several families in Anchorage who are taking care of visiting basketball teams, in town for the Great Alaska Shootout this Thanksgiving. The Dartmouth Club of Alaska asked if some members would be willing to invite players and coaches over for dinner. Several stepped up to cook extra food and have a few additional visitors Thursday evening. The team split up at their downtown hotel and carpooled to various homes for a few hours with familiar fans, before their next game against UAA. “It's really nice,” said Nick Jackson, a Dartmouth sophomore, “that sense of feeling at home even though we are in Alaska.” Ken Miller, president of the Darmouth Club of Alaska, said the newly formed group has 241 members statewide, who are eager to help out their college community.
