Emergency officials are closely watching the Talkeetna and Susitna rivers and are preparing for potential spring break-up flooding, a few months after floodwaters seeped into town last fall, temporarily evacuating the small town. Assistant Chief of the Talkeetna Fire Department, Eric Denkewalter, said on Thursday that usually Talkeetna residents brace for fall flooding, but this year, colder spring temperatures are causing a concern. by Channel 2 News staff Monday, May 3, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The ice is moving on the Yukon River and so far it's not causing problems for villages along the waterway. The National Weather Service Alaska-Pacific River Forecast Center says ice broke up Friday at Eagle and heavy runs of river ice continue to move pass the community seven miles west of the Canada border. Ice remains intact at Circle, with the breakup front as of Monday morning about 25 miles upstream.

A drowned woman's body was recovered Friday afternoon by Anchorage police and fire units after she apparently fell into Campbell Creek and was trapped under ice. According to APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker, 35-year-old Lamia Bouziane lived with roommates on the 2000 block of Dimond Drive, near the intersection of Lake Otis Parkway and Tudor Road. Officers at the scene say Bouziane was reported missing from the home at about 12:30 p.m. when she didn't show up for work and her employer came to look for her, then called police since her car was still there.

Alaska State Troopers are looking for a snowmachiner who broke through the ice near Teller. Troopers say 53-year-old Marvin Okleasik of Teller said he was riding to Brevig Mission Wednesday night with a passenger, 44-year-old Barbara Scholten of Teller, when the accident occurred. Troopers say he walked back into the village and said the snowmachine broke through the ice, and Scholten fell through. Troopers say search-and-rescue efforts were hampered by poor sea ice conditions.

The remains of a woman who went missing after her snowmachine fell through ice last week near Teller were found Monday. Alaska State Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters says Barbara Scholten, 44, was found shortly after 12:30 p.m. Scholten was reported missing Wednesday after Teller resident Marvin Okleasik, 53, returned to Teller on foot and reported that the snowmachine he and Scholten were riding to Brevig Mission had fallen through ice. ...

It's only appropriate that Anchorage saw snow over the weekend, because hockey season is almost upon us. The Alaska Aces open training camp Friday. Head Coach Brent Thompson will lead his players out on the Ben Boeke Arena ice at 10:00 a.m. Practice is open to the public and camp will run through October 14. The regular season starts October 15. The first time Aces fans can see their team on ice is next Wednesday and Thursday when the Aces host the Stockton Thunder in their "Purple with Purpose" fundraiser.

Jenny Potter's hat trick and a five-point afternoon from Natalie Darwitz propelled the Americans to a 13-0 rout of Russia in women's ice hockey. Team USA thumped China 12-1 in its opener. Palmer's Kerry Weiland logged 18 minutes, 19 seconds of ice time and had a minor penalty. Darwitz had a goal and three assists. Potter added an assist for a four-point effort.

by Channel 2 News staff Saturday, January 2, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Searchers have found the body of a missing Naknek man. State troopers say 75-year-old Wilbur "Arch" Willson apparently drowned in the Naknek River. Willson's wife says he left for a hunting trip to a cabin 13 miles up Big Creek on Sunday afternoon. She reported him missing the night after he failed to call in. Troopers found his car parked near the Naknek River on and followed ATV tracks leading to the ice. There, they discovered a hole in the ice. On Wednesday, a helicopter spotted the body underwater in the river.

Garry Nunn scored with 3:08 remaining in regulation to cap a wild third period and give the Alaska Aces a 2-1 victory over the Stockton Thunder in game one of the ECHL's Western Conference Semifinals at Sullivan Arena.  Following two scoreless periods, Stockton's Greg Squires broke the ice with a goal 8:07 into the third.  The lead proved to be short lived, however, as Dan Kissel scored less than four minutes later, setting the stage...

by Ted Land Friday, December 26, 2008 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- You may have noticed parts of the Delaney Park Strip have been taped off recently. Crews are out there starting work on a project that will transform the strip for at least a month. All day long Friday trucks were pulling up and dumping snow onto a pile. It's being used to construct huge public art displays in a project called FREEZE. Artists and architects from around the world will gather in Anchorage at the end of the month to begin installing their works.
