Anchorage Police are investigating a suspicious death near Valley of the Moon Park, after a driver found the body of an Alaska Native man near the side of Arctic Boulevard and 20th Ave around 4:30 a.m., Sunday morning. For several hours, drivers found Arctic blocked by the police crime scene van at 20th Avenue. Sgt. Glenn Daily says the body was found between 19th and 20th.  Police have identified the man and are attempting to contact next of kin. Sgt. Daily says police are asking for help in trying to learn more about the man's death, which appears to be due to a head injury that isn't immediately explainable.

When it comes to reviewing the nearly 1,000 missing-persons reports APD receives each year, police follow certain criteria to assess each report. Anchorage police say they have shot and wounded a man during a routine traffic stop Sunday evening. Police say the officer-involved shooting occured just after 7 p.m. downtown, between 11th and 12th Avenue on Denali Street. During the stop, officials say the officer ran a check on all three people inside the stopped Chevy Blazer. "One of the occupants was found to have a warrant out for his arrest and a back-up officer was called," said APD Deputy Chief Steve Hebbe.  APD says upon approaching the vehicle a male passenger produced a firearm and the officers fired at him multiple times, striking him at least once.

An Anchorage man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler's office. 65-year-old Scott Hunter Sauer received his sentence Friday for having over 5-thousand images and videos of child pornography. The investigation found that he had used computers at his home and workplace to trade on the Internet that Assistant U.S. Attorney Audrey J. Renschen described as “material that portrays sadistic or masochistic conduct or other depictions of violence.” After serving his time, Sauer will spend 20 years of supervised release and received sex offender assessment and treat, along with registering as a sex offender.

Alaska State Troopers say alcohol and controlled substances are believed to have been involved in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday on Knik-Goose Bay Road that left two drivers with minor injuries. A Monday AST dispatch says troopers from Palmer and the Bureau of Highway Patrol responded at 1:07 a.m. Sunday to the scene, at Knik-Goose Bay's intersection with Kathilyn Road. According to troopers, the incident began when a Ford pickup truck headed east on Knik-Goose Bay and driven by 21-year-old Wasilla man Shane Warren started to fishtail.

The president and CEO of the Calista Native Corp., Andrew Guy, has been on administrative leave since mid-July. But it appears his fortunes could change this week, after new members were elected to the corporation's board of directors at Calista's annual shareholders meeting, held this year in Goodnews Bay on Saturday. Calista, the regional corporation for Southwest Alaska and represents more than 13,000 shareholders. After years of struggling, the corporation's recent entry into the federal government contracting business has made it profitable.

One business was destroyed, and three others were damaged in a fire that broke out on Talkeetna's Main Street early Thursday morning.  No one was hurt. Chief Ken Farina says the blaze started around 2:25 A.M. inside the Little Dumplings Café and spread to the Denali Zipline Tours building and Denali Dry Goods Store.  The Wildflower Café suffered minor damage to its porch. Crews from as far away as Wasilla and Houston were called into assist.  "It could have been absolutely devastating,” said Farina.  “I mean if we had the winds we had going on here a couple days ago. " "I lost a lot of old things in the attic like a huge grizzly bear hide,” said Denali Dry Goods owner Tom Waite.

The FBI and the Anchorage Police Department returned Tuesday morning to a Turnagain home where Israel Keyes, the suspect arrested and charged with the kidnapping and killing of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, stayed in Anchorage. FBI Special Agent Eric Gonzalez confirmed that FBI was on location and that APD were assisting with the investigation. The APD crime scene van and investigators with metal detectors were at the home located at the 2400 block of Spurr Ln. The home was raided in March and the FBI seized a storage unit . Keyes remains in federal custody awaiting trial for his alleged connection with the missing barista's death in February earlier this year.

Alaska State Troopers have identified the 61-year-old man who died after a Monday shooting at a cabin 25 miles west of Willow which remains under investigation. According to an AST dispatch released late Wednesday, Hiline Lake resident John Charles Lamb's wife and two young children were at the cabin when he was shot. Alaska National Guard spokesperson Maj. Guy Hayes says an Air National Guard HH-60 Pavehawk helicopter flew two troopers to the location Monday evening. Lamb was medevaced to an Anchorage hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, but subsequently pronounced dead.
