A moose marked the last day of school Thursday with a visit to Service High School, during which Anchorage police used a cruiser to slowly chase the animal off a field. In a brief video sent to Channel 2 by Service High student Kyla Jones, the moose ambles along at a casual pace outside her classroom, followed by an officer at the wheel of a squad car. APD spokesperson Anita Shell says police were informed at 11:07 a.m. about the moose outside the school, at 5577 Abbott Rd. “This moose had clearly been a problem since 10 o'clock in the morning,” Shell said.

An Ester man has been charged with several hunting offenses, after Alaska Wildlife Troopers say he shot a moose in his yard and neither reported it to state authorities nor salvaged meat from the carcass. According to a Wednesday AST dispatch, Fairbanks troopers responded April 7 to a tip that Michael Baldwin, 21, had shot the moose months earlier and let it go to waste. “Investigation revealed that Baldwin had killed a cow moose in January because his dog had chased it in his yard,” troopers wrote.

Out in the Mat-Su Valley, the Alaska Moose Federation are in the midst of a project to keep spring moose newborns and their mothers safe by creating new habitat for the animals. The federation owns and uses a 20-thousand pound roller to bring vegetation back that moose like to feed on, along with the help of a tractor owned by the Alaska Operating Engineers. The heavy machines pull over trees and brush. Mike Holcomb, Training Director with the Alaska Operating Engineers, says they are excited to be involved in this habitat enhancement project.

A cow moose was shot and killed in a Fairbanks residential neighborhood Saturday afternoon after Alaska State Troopers say it trampled a woman, inflicting minor injuries. A Tuesday AST dispatch says the woman -- 53-year-old Catherine Beck -- called Alaska Wildlife Troopers at about 1 p.m. Saturday to report she had been trampled at her home, on Palo Verde Avenue in an area north of Fairbanks International Airport. According to AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen, Beck had stepped out of her home and was headed to her car when the agitated moose approached her. “She left her house and it was right there in her yard, so it attacked her,” Ipsen said.

The dramatic rescue of a moose that fell through ice at Alexander Creek was recently caught on camera by the group of snowmachiners who saved it from the frigid waters. The cow moose was literally up a creek without a paddle at the site, near the base of Mount Susitna near Anchorage, until it got a little help from human hands. Four people, including Carl Thiele Jr., Micheal Mason, Elson Mast, and Nancy Conklin, plus a dog, helped the struggling moose out of the water, where it had apparently broken through ice while trying to eat willows.

On Saturday, the moose-vehicle collision sign in Wasilla was up to 135, and the state has made efforts to curb those numbers by allowing hunters to guard the highways and keep the moose off the roads. The Mat-Su Valley has been home to a thriving moose population for centuries. Now, roadways run right through the middle of the moose habitat, which has caused moose-vehicle collisions to increase. The Department of Fish and Game are now allowing hot spot hunts along roadways to try to decrease the collisions.
