Fresh off Saturday’s 32-16 victory over top-ranked Chugiak, the West Eagles have moved into the No. 1 position in the latest ASBN large schools prep football poll. The Eagles (3-0) manhandled the Mustangs (2-1) on the night Chugiak was celebrating the dedication of its football field. The stadium was re-named after long time Mustang football coach Tom Huffer Sr. Before the contest Chugiak coach Duncan Shackleford said “losing was not an option.” Apparently, the Eagles didn’t get that memo.

The Cook Inlet Conference Baseball season is a 10-game sprint that allows little time for a slump. The Service Cougars and South Wolverines have avoided that, and have now also clinched berths in the ASAA tournament with two games to play. Service defeated Dimond, 3-2 on Friday to remain perfect at 8 and 0. After falling behind 2-0 after three innings, the Cougars rallied with two in the fifth to tie the game. Then in the sixth, Trace Woodruff collected the go-ahead RBI single with two outs. Dimond loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but could not push the tying run across. The Lynx drop to 4 and 4 and fall out of contention.

A high-school football season is like a political race: drama, name-calling and very few Miller-defeats-Murkowski-style upsets. The featured game of Week 5 was more like a Kennedy-Nixon clash of titans. No. 3-ranked Chugiak hosted No. 2-ranked Service at the Tom Huffer, Sr. Stadium Friday. Both teams are 3 and 1 overall, 2 and 1 in the Cook Inlet Conference. A first-quarter Cougars drive saw Megan Dotten line up a field goal, only to see it blocked -- just like an attempted kick in a Chugiak-Service game last year.

Week 5 of the high-school football season kicks off Friday in a big Cook Inlet Conference showdown, with the Chugiak Mustangs -- No. 3 in the large-school rankings -- hosting the second-ranked Service Cougars at Tom Huffer Field in Chugiak. The Mustangs are preparing for the Cougars' prolific spread offense, but they also have a few weapons of their own, like running back Greg Ghramm and placekicker Bryan Mayley, who kicked a state record 52-yard field goal last week against Dimond.

After a morning Alaska School Activities Association meeting left the fate of the Chugiak High football team in the Anchorage School District's hands, the district has decided that the team's three forfeits imposed by ASAA will stand and Chugiak will not be going to the playoffs. An administrative error allowed an ineligible player to participate during the season, leading to the forfeiture of the team's three wins earlier in the season. The Alaska School Activities Association Board of Directors decided Monday morning to uphold a prior decision to forfeit a series of Chugiak victories because of the mistake.

Through six weeks of the Alaska high school football season, the Chugiak Mustangs held a record of 3 and 3, and despite a Cook Inlet Conference mark of only 2 and 3, the Mustangs had a chance to make the state playoffs by wining their last two games. That all changed, however because of an administrative error that resulted in Chugiak using an ineligible player. The player was enrolled in a home school program and played all season, but it turned...

by Channel 2 News staff Tuesday, May 4, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The Chugiak Mustangs will kick off the next football season at Tom Huffer Sr. Football Stadium after the Anchorage School Board approved a name change of the facility. Huffer was the first football coach in Chugiak history, starting in 1969, and guided the Mustangs to two state championships. Still a ubiquitous presence at myriad high school athletic events throughout the school year even in retirement, Huffer has been dubbed Mr. Football within the community.

In Cook Inlet Conference flag football Wednesday afternoon, Chugiak faced Service on Dimond's field. The Cougars were up 13-8 in the third quarter, but Kendra Bulawa led a charge to change that, finding Jessi McMullen for a touchdown that put Chugiak on top 14-13. On the next Mustangs drive, Chugiak took advantage of a blown coverage spotted by Bulawa, who sent the ball to Kendra Harter on a streak down the right side, raising the score to 21-13 Chugiak. The Mustangs added one more touchdown before game’s end, coming away with a 28-19 victory over the Cougars.
