by Channel 2 News staff and The Associated Press Sunday, June 13, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- KTUU's Channel 2 Newshour has received the Associated Press Television-Radio Association's 2010 Mark Twain Award for Best 60-Minute News Broadcast among small to midsize TV stations in Western states. Several broadcasters were in the running for the Class 2 award, which is given to the best one-hour newscast produced by a TV station with fewer than 50 newsroom employees. Many other Mark Twain Award winners were named during the association's 63rd annual awards ceremony, held Saturday night at Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel in Anaheim, Calif.

Sean Doogan is co-producer and co-anchor of the Channel 2 News Morning Edition. During his tenure at KTUU, Sean has reported on oil and gas policy, politics, the military, and rural issues. Sean's journalism career began as a morning anchor and senior enterprise journalist at the Fairbanks NBC affiliate, KTVF, in 2001. In 2004, Sean and his family moved from his childhood home in Alaska's interior to Anchorage, where he began working as a weekend reporter. After moving up to work on the 5 O'Clock Report and the Channel 2 Newshour in 2005, Sean became "the man on the scene" reporting live from rural areas across the state.

The 4A hockey scene gets most of the attention in Alaska, but the semifinals of the state 3A tournament provided a true classic.  Delta's Eli Erickson capped off a two goal, three assist performance with the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Huskies over the top seeded Hawks, 6-5.  Hutchison, who allowed Delta three unanswered goals to trail 5-3, rallied to tie on a goal by Troy Williams with 4.4 seconds to go in the third period.  Delta Junction...

The baseball programs at South Anchorage and Dimond have established a tremendous rivalry, and in 2011, they met in the finals of both the state American Legion and state high school tournaments. In the ASAA finals in Palmer, the lead changed hands several times before the Wolverines took the title by scoring six runs in the 12th inning to win, 14-8. High school games only last 7 innings in regulation. Tied at 6 after seven innings, both teams scored twice in the 8th to keep the game going.

The period of domination for the Seawolf cross country program extended into 2011, as both the men and women enjoyed undefeated regular seasons and swept the GNAC and West Region championships.  Individually, there were standouts as well.  Micah Chelino and Ruth Keino led the team efforts with title-winning performances in both the conference and regional meets.  At the NCAA Division II meet, both teams thrived again, as the men matched their...

Next week, the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame will celebrate its fifth annual class of inductees, and this week Channel 2 will air a series of profiles in honor of their achievements. Nordic skier Kikkan Randall, a three-time Olympian and two-time winner of World Cup sprint races, will be the first subject of the four-part series airing on the NewsHour starting Wednesday. This year's ceremony will have a distinct East High flavor. That's where Randall went to high school, and that's where legendary coach Chuck White -- the subject of Thursday’s profile -- put his stamp on its basketball team for 34 seasons.

After splitting their two regular season meetings, the boys basketball teams at Bartlett and West met for the Cook Inlet Conference title on March 5th, and the action did not disappoint. The Golden Bears' Damon Sherman Newsome scored 25 points, but missed a shot a the buzzer to win it, sending the contest to overtime, 74-all. In OT, Devon Bookert scored the last of his 28 points to put West up, 80-79 with less than a minute to play. At the other end, Treshawn King-Dunbar drew a foul and nailed both free throws to put Bartlett ahead, 81-80 with 10 seconds remaining.

Having missed the state football playoffs in three consecutive years, the Wasilla Warriors entered 2011 well off the rader.  But five straight wins put the Warriors in position to clinch the railbelt conference title.  That is, if they could beat rival Palmer, which had won 10 of the last 13 meetings head to head.  The first three quarters were a see-saw affair.  Palmer took the lead twice, only to have Wasilla fight back to tie each time.  Late...
