Table 6 Restaurant 3210 Denali St., Suite 8 $5-$16 per plate 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday 907-562-6000 http://www.table6.net After close to a year of Lunchbox reviews, Midtown pickings are becoming fewer and farther between -- but every now and then I drive by a place that's hiding in plain sight, and turn in to eat for a long-delayed review. Table 6 is a trendy spot in Midtown, the brownstone strip mall in which it's ensconced lending the restaurant a fairly classy façade.

by Jason Lamb Tuesday, February 23, 2010 ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- While most restaurant owners in Anchorage do a fine job running their establishments, city reports show a few in town have fallen short when it comes to the health and safety of the food you eat. From filthy food surfaces to rodent droppings all over the kitchen, the horror stories can be pretty disgusting. For a break during lunch you might try the Sushi Ya Japanese restaurant on Dimond. Its easily-accessible location attracts dozens of diners every day. But the city's health inspections database shows the restaurant received several critical violations back in September.

Even after Parkinson’s disease made it impossible for Peggy Brown to wait tables, she still sought out small ways to help at the restaurant she and her husband had run for more than 50 years. Her hands shaking from the disease, she’d help refill water glasses and say hello to customers. Brown died on Sunday after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 87. “This was her life,” said her daughter Patricia Brown Heller, gesturing at the diner, filling with breakfast customers on a Tuesday morning.

Anchorage fire investigators are looking into a Saturday morning fire that scorched a local restaurant. 15 units from the Anchorage Fire Department responded to a fire at Sunrise Grill off of Old Seward at about 5 a.m. No one was hurt and fire marshals say they don't know what caused the fire. Investigators say it took fire crews a couple of hours to put out the blaze and they'll be back on Monday to do more research as to what caused the fire. “The majority of the structure is intact but it might be a total loss for the business,” said Brian Balega, AFD Investigator.

A nearby landmark doubles as one of the few exceptions amid a sea of chain restaurants and fast-food outlets, however, and I finally returned for a visit. Gwennie's Old Alaska Restaurant sits just north of Spenard's hotel-restaurant core, in a ramshackle three-story building adorned with a totem-pole mural on its south side; it's a little garish, but gives the place personality and makes it nearly impossible to miss from the road.
