by Bill Poovey The Associated Press Thursday, April 29, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A federal jury in the third day of deliberating the Sarah Palin e-mail hacking case has told the judge they are deadlocked on one charge after reaching unanimous decisions on three counts. The deadlocked charge is identity theft. U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips told the jurors Thursday they could deliberate longer or go ahead and announce the three verdicts on charges of wire fraud, unauthorized access to a computer and obstruction of justice.

by Bill Poovey The Associated Press Tuesday, April 27, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A federal jury deliberated six hours without reaching a verdict Tuesday in the case against a former University of Tennessee student charged with hacking into Sarah Palin's e-mail. The jury of eight men and six women started deliberating in Knoxville Tuesday morning, then adjourned for the day around 4:45 p.m. EDT in the case against 22-year-old David Kernell. They will return Wednesday.

by Bill Poovey The Associated Press Wednesday, April 28, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A federal jury in Knoxville has deliberated for a second day without a verdict in the felony case against a young man accused of hacking the e-mail of Sarah Palin. The jury deliberated Wednesday and will return again Thursday. Jurors worked behind closed doors with hundreds of evidence documents. Twenty-two-year-old David Kernell is charged with identity theft, wire fraud, unauthorized access to a computer and obstruction of justice.

by The Associated Press Monday, April 26, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Jurors are scheduled to begin their deliberations Tuesday in the trial of a former University of Tennessee student charged with hacking into Sarah Palin's e-mail. Both sides gave their closing arguments in federal court in Knoxville on Monday. Defense attorney Wade Davies rested his case without calling his client, David Kernell, to the stand. Davies said Kernell "made some stupid decisions" and hacked into Palin's e-mail account as a prank.

Sean Parnell has appointed Tanana Chiefs Conference subsistence resources director Mike Smith of Fairbanks to the state Board of Fisheries. The 52-year-old Smith replaces Janet Woods as the only Alaska Native on the seven-person board that regulates all fisheries in Alaska. He is the only member on the board who resides north of the Alaska Range. Smith, who grew up in the Yukon River village of Nulato and Fairbanks, has also been a subsistence and commercial fisherman on the Yukon.

by Bill Poovey The Associated Press Friday, April 23, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Sarah Palin has testified against a 22-year-old man charged with breaking into her e-mail account, saying later it's "up to the judge" to decide whether conviction should lead to prison. Former University of Tennessee student David Kernell faces up to 50 years in federal prison if convicted of identity theft, mail fraud and two other felony charges. His lawyer has called the case a prank, not a crime.

by The Associated Press Thursday, April 22, 2010 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Sarah Palin could testify as early as Friday at the Tennessee trial of a former college student charged with hacking into the ex-Alaska governor's e-mail. Husband Todd is also a potential government witness in the trial that will likely last into next week. Prosecutors used Facebook records Thursday to show jurors how David Kernell bragged about his exploit and described his attempt to mask his identity.

The former GOP vice presidential candidate started the war of words this week when she suggested that Obama was weak on nuclear defense. Obama shot back while overseas to sign a nuclear reduction deal with Russia, calling Palin "not much of an expert" on nuclear issues.

by Jeremy Hsieh The Associated Press Monday, April 5, 2010 JUNEAU, Alaska -- The Alaska House has defeated a bill that would have limited the governor's selection of members on an ethics panel responsible for arbitrating executive branch ethics complaints. The bill making the chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court responsible for nominating appointees to the Alaska Personnel Board was defeated 19-18 on Monday, but is likely to be reconsidered Tuesday. The current method came into question with former Gov. Sarah Palin.
