by The Associated Press Thursday, May 20, 2010 JUNEAU, Alaska -- Gov. Sean Parnell is continuing a tradition. His office has released dates for the Governor's Family Picnics. Parnell's office says the picnics have been held annually for over a decade and are put on with donations from businesses and volunteer help. They're scheduled for June 24 in Juneau; July 17 in Anchorage; and July 25 in Fairbanks.

According to a new Rasmussen Reports poll, Gov. Sean Parnell remains the front-runner in Alaska’s race for governor. With about 52 percent support among respondents, the Republican incumbent holds a double-digit lead over Democrat Ethan Berkowitz, who received about 39 percent support. The telephone survey found that five percent of likely voters prefer other candidates, while another five percent are undecided.

The first round of Permanent Fund Dividend checks should arrive in Alaskans’ bank accounts and mailboxes Thursday. This year's PFD will be $1,281.00, slightly less than it was last year. Gov. Sean Parnell announced the payout amount in Juneau last month. More than 640,000 people will receive their checks.

Gov. Sean Parnell has chosen an Anchorage principal as his new education commissioner. Michael Hanley currently runs Kincaid Elementary School and has taught classes in the Anchorage School District since 1991. Parnell says Hanley's experience and dedication to student engagement and achievement make him a natural choice to lead Alaska's education system. Hanley replaces current education commissioner Larry LeDoux.

by Channel 2 News staff Tuesday, February 02, 2010 JUNEAU, Alaska -- Gov. Sean Parnell is submitting a supplemental spending plan for this year. Part of the request would go toward forward funding K-12 education, as well as setting aside money for his proposed deferred maintenance program and repaying a large debt to the state reserve fund. The requests come after a revised revenue forecast that the governor's office says projects a more than $2 billion surplus for the fiscal year ending in June.

Sean Parnell to suspend Alaska's motor fuels tax may put the state's federal transportation funding at risk. Young commends Parnell for trying to do something about high gas prices, but says that suspending the gas tax will make it harder to persuade other members of Congress to approve money for the state.

by Megan Baldino Wednesday, January 13, 2010 Gubernatorial candidate Ralph Samuels is urging Gov. Sean Parnell to seek DNR Commissioner Tom Irwin's resignation. Samuels says Irwin is making poor decisions for the state and points to the recent ruling against the state regarding Point Thomson. Samuels says the governor needs to show leadership and restore the public's confidence in the Department of Natural Resources. A spokesperson for the governor referred questions to the Parnell campaign.

by Ted Land Thursday, May 13, 2010 Gov. Sean Parnell has three weeks to decide what, if anything, to cut from the proposed operating budget. He has until June 4 to sign off on the $8 billion spending plan or veto items he thinks should not be funded. The budget is roughly $7.5 million dollars less than what the governor had requested. The money is used to run the state as well as support local governments and non-profits.

by The Associated Press Tuesday, June 01, 2010 FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Gov. Sean Parnell has until a week from Wednesday to veto individual projects in the state Legislature's construction budget. That means these are anxious times for supporters of big-ticket items in the Fairbanks area. The $3 billion capital spending bill includes grants for hundreds of projects across the state. Two of the biggest are in the Interior - $40 million to help build a bridge across the Tanana River and room to borrow, pending voter approval, $109 million for a science center at the University of Alaska.
