Anchorage police fired at least six shotgun blasts at Harry Smith, the man who died in a July 1 South Anchorage standoff after he aimed an airgun at officers and less-than-lethal rounds failed to stop him, according to new information released Thursday. In a July 30 letter (PDF) from the state's Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals to APD detective Mark Huelskoetter, supervising assistant attorney general Clint Campion explained the office's decision not to prosecute officers involved in Smith's shooting.

A Barrow man is facing attempted-murder charges after allegedly firing a shotgun at a pickup truck Sunday morning, according to North Slope Borough police. Officers responded to reports of gunshots near Egasak Street in Barrow shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday. “Preliminary investigation revealed Barrow resident Akugaq Ben Asisaun Leavitt, age 28, had discharged at least one round from a 20 gauge shotgun striking a pickup truck occupied by three Barrow residents, none of whom were reported to have been injured,” officers wrote in a statement on the case Monday.

(Photo: KTUU Abby Hancock) APD has arrested a suspect in the Muldoon trailer park shooting on Tuesday morning. Anchorage police spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker confirmed that a male victim was shot in the foot with a shotgun around 9:12 a.m. in the 7500 block of Boundary Ave. Police arrested 29-year-old Chase Brewer around 10:40 a.m. in a nearby trailer and said he is related to the victim. APD said it found the shotgun near a neighboring trailer. The Anchorage School District put Bartlett High School on lock down.

Anchorage police have arrested a man on charges including attempted murder after he allegedly grazed a Yellow Cab driver's abdomen Thursday morning with a shotgun blast, then walked down a Spenard street firing the weapon into the air. APD spokesperson Anita Shell says the cab driver, 30-year-old James Gregory, called dispatchers at about 4:30 a.m. to report a suspicious man prowling near a vehicle on the 4300 block of Cope Street. Gregory spoke with the man, who told him he lived in the neighborhood -- then stepped behind a house and returned with the shotgun he fired at Gregory, inflicting non-life-threatening wounds.

Anchorage police have arrested four suspects in a string of robberies earlier this year in the Bragaw and Mountain View areas. The men were arraigned in court Thursday and Friday for a crime wave that APD sasy goes back to January. An Anchorage grand jury indicted Aaron Aasa, 26, and Ronald E. Thompson Jr., 18; as well as brothers Eric Vaifanua, 18, and Faamanu "Junior" Vaifanua, 21. The four face charges including conspiracy to commit robbery and evidence tampering. They are each being held on $50,000 bail with a requirement for a third-party custodian.

A village public safety officer in Napakiak was shot early Saturday morning, prompting Alaska State Troopers to arrive from Bethel and apprehend a suspect on an attempted-murder charge. AST's Bethel post received a call from one of Napakiak's two VPSOs at 4 a.m. Saturday reporting that the other VPSO, Darren Alexie, was being treated by medical personnel after being shot by a man who was loose in the village with a shotgun. Troopers flew to Napakiak in a state aircraft and arrived at 4:30 a.m., where they immediately located 25-year-old Teddy Johnson walking down the street with a shotgun.

An Anchorage woman is facing first- and second-degree murder charges for the death of her roommate at their Turnagain home. Berne Marie Peterson, 66, was arraigned Thursday afternoon for the murder of 58-year-old Colleen Fukuda, who police say was shot in the head, possibly while sleeping. At about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a woman who was shot and killed in West Anchorage, the Anchorage Police Department said. When they arrived, police found Fukuda's body in her bed, dead from a shotgun wound.

Corey Cogdell hasn't been on vacation since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The bronze medal-winning trap-shooter continues to work on her skills -- and the world has noticed. The 24-year-old from Eagle River is ranked eighth in the world in women's trap-shooting by the International Shooting Sports Association. Cogdell has her sights set on the 2012 London Olympics. She's already qualified for the 2011 U.S. women's shotgun world clay target team, and has two top-10 finishes this year in Women's World Cup competition.

Court documents filed in Kenai say Thomas Mason told Alaska State Troopers he saw Lyle Ludvick shoot 23-year-old Brendan McGee July 16 in an argument over a $500 payment for a gun. Ludvick is facing a murder charge.

The Anchorage Police Department has not identified the man pending notification of next of kin. The shooting happened shortly before 6 a.m. in an apartment complex on West 31st Avenue. Officers responded to a report that a man was assaulting his wife at about 4:30 a.m. After the woman had fled to a neighbor's residence, the husband kicked the door down there, but went back to his own apartment and barricaded himself inside for about 20 minutes, police spokesperson Marlene Lammers said.
