Friday produced a pair of thrilling semifinals in the ASAA 4A boys basketball tournament.  when the smoke cleared, Dimond and Service emerged with title hopes still alive. Dimond outlasted 2001 champion Bartlett in two overtimes, 83-76, thanks to 22 points from Ryden Hines and 20 by Colter Lasher.  The end of regulation and the two extra periods were dramatic.  Bartlett's Treshawn King-Dunbar nailed a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the fourth quarter to force overtime.  Then in OT, the Golden Bears' Iziah Sherman-Newsome hit a shot with four seconds left to send the game to a second OT. Finally, Lasher took command with two field goals in the seconds extra frame to left Dimond.  In the other semi, Service took down top seed Wasilla, 50-46 behind 16 points from Adam Klie and 15 by Amu Aukusitino.  The upset denied Wasilla a chance to send both its boys and girls into the finals.  The defending champion Warrior girls team had no problem with Colony in the semifinals, winning 47-32.  Wasilla led 19-6 after one quarter.  The Warriors will face West Valley for the title, after the Wolfpack downed Juneau, 42-35.

A Wasilla councilman is under fire after a recent trip to Sitka on city business on the city's dime. It involves the condition of council member Steve Menard's hotel room that left the room out of service for three days while staff cleaned and repaired the room. The Westmark hotel in Sitka was where Menard and several other council members were staying last week for the Alaska Municipal League conference. The hotel said there were incidents of damage like this in the past, but not to this extent.
