Emergency Management Officials in Kenai Borough said Tuesday night that the flooded Kenai River had finally crested -- as far south as Soldotna -- but they warned residents not to become complacent.    Heavy mountain rains were still feeding the Kenai, which was measured at half a foot above flood stage in Soldotna at its peak. Because those rainwaters are still working their way down from the mountains, the river is going to take a long time to recede.    The best estimate right now is, that the river will not go below flood stage until Thursday.

In the Kenai Peninsula Borough Monda night, floodwaters were still rising as people braced for the worst flooding in 6 years. Late Monday afternoon, the river in Soldotna had reached flood stage (12 feet on that section of the Kenai) and was expected to keep rising until sometime Tuesday. Emergency Management officials say the river will crest at 12 feet-6 inches. The problem is, the flood waters are not expected to recede to below flood stage until sometime Thursday. And even that forecast is uncertain due to rainstorms in the nearby mountains.

Two Soldotna women were arrested Thursday on attempted-murder charges after one of them allegedly lured her boyfriend into a knifepoint ambush by the other inside a car, according to Alaska State Troopers. A Friday AST dispatch says Soldotna troopers responded at about 9 a.m. Thursday to reports of the incident, which took place in Sterling. “Subsequent investigation found Diana Steger, 31, of Soldotna texted her boyfriend and made arrangements to pick him up, drive to the laundromat, and talk about their relationship,” troopers wrote.

They don't use any fancy machines or conveyor belts, just a bulldozer to crush glass.  That's all it takes at the Kenai Peninsula Borough's central landfill in Soldotna. "We end up using the crushed glass for road building material, as a sub-base material," said Solid Waste Director Jack Maryott. That sub-base material is used on the dirt roads into and out of the landfill.  Normally the borough has to buy gravel for this process at a cost of $17 per yard. "On this particular site, there is just really silty sand, so there is no gravel on site, so to really construct some good solid roads we need sub base material.” Reusing the glass saves the borough 75 to 100 cubic yards of space each year.

A Thursday morning fire damaged a Soldotna home and kept crews busy for a few hours, according to Central Emergency Services. The fire happened around 3:45 a.m. in the 39300 block of Hallelujah Trail Drive. CES responded to a mounted gas meter on fire on the side of the house. Brad Nelson, CES Health and Safety Officer, said a husband and wife lived at the home and the husband heard a grating sound and stepped outside and saw the blaze. The single story home was reportedly fully engulfed and by the time crews arrived on scene, the roof was on fire and the gas line was shooting flames into the home.
