A construction worker from Anchorage was injured on the Sterling Highway near Cooper Landing Friday afternoon when a piece of equipment rolled over his foot and lower leg, according to Alaska State Troopers. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says troopers responded just before 4:15 p.m. Friday to Mile 54 of the Sterling, where 31-year-old Ross Kennedy had been wounded in a “non-traffic accident.” Peters says Kennedy was medevaced from the scene by a LifeMed air ambulance, but no long-term road closures were reported during the incident.

Two Anchorage residents died Monday evening in a head-on crash on the Sterling Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers. 26-year old Jenna Herrmann was pronounced dead on scene by Central Emergency Services, and 35 year-old Bilal Pitts died later on at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. The collision happened at milepost 87 on the Sterling around 7:58 p.m. Monday and closed the road until early Tuesday morning. 20 year-old Jesse Chumley of Sterling was driving northbound in a 2007 Nissan Titan truck, and Herrmann was driving southbound in a 1998 Dodge Stratus with Pitts in the left rear seat and 29 year-old Tommy Brown II, another Anchorage resident, in the right front passenger seat.

A female driver exchanged gunfire with an Alaskan Wildlife Trooper and was shot in the torso after reportedly driving erratically on the Sterling Highway near Happy Valley Sunday evening, according to Alaska State Troopers. AST spokesperson Megan Peters says an Alaska Wildlife Trooper spotted a vehicle driving erratically in the northbound lane around 6:15 p.m. Sunday and attempted to make a stop. Peters says the woman, who remains unidentified because she hasn't yet been arrested or charged with a crime, stopped briefly and fired at the trooper, who then returned fire.

by Jackie Bartz and The Associated Press Monday, July 5, 2010 KENAI, Alaska -- Kenai National Wildlife Refuge officials say bear activity has prompted the closure of a forested area between the Russian River Ferry entrance, the Kenai River and the Sterling Highway. Refuge manager Janet Schmidt says she's worried about a sow and three cubs that have been frequenting the area due to an accumulation of salmon carcasses on the riverbank. Schmidt encourages fishermen to take their fish out whole or use the nearby filet tables.

On Wednesday afternoon, a Soldotna man was killed a motorcycle crash with a compact SUV at Mile 91.2 of the Sterling highway, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers said the crash happened at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday when Mickie Warwick, 56 of Anchorage, turned left into a driveway in the SUV on the highway and Jaramiah Hundley, 23, crashed into the passenger side of the SUV. Hundley was transported to the Central Peninsula Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A Michigan man driving with his wife died in a head-on collision Monday evening involving rental vehicles at Mile 72.5 of the Sterling Highway, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers said 52-year-old Richard Price of Michigan died on scene when 27-year-old Joshua Millstein of Florida crossed into the northbound lane and struck Price's vehicle around 8:44 p.m. Monday. Price was driving a Nissan Versa with his wife Diane Price, 58 of Michigan, and she was flown to Central Peninsula Hospital with serious injuries.

An Anchor Point man is in critical condition after his vehicle collided into a tree, according to Alaska State Trooper officials. Shortly after 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, troopers responded to a motor vehicle collision injury at mile 163 of the Sterling Highway near Anchor Point. Troopers wrote in a dispatch report that Phillip Jainese, 69, "lost control of his vehicle, ran off the road and hit a tree on the east side of the highway. " Medics transported Jainese to South Peninsula hospital where he was flown to Providence Hospital in Anchorage in critical condition.

Alaska State Troopers are investigating the death of an Anchorage man whose body was found Monday near Kasilof, with few details immediately available on how it happened. A Friday AST dispatch says the body of 50-year-old Calvin Bennett was found at about 4 p.m. Monday, near Mile 102.5 of the Sterling Highway. “Bennett was found approximately 30 yards off the highway in the wood line,” troopers wrote. According to AST spokesperson Megan Peters, troopers don't believe foul play was involved in Bennett's death.

A woman fleeing from an Alaska State Trooper died early Tuesday morning when her sport-utility vehicle went down an embankment off the Seward Highway. AST spokesperson Beth Ipsen says the woman, 46-year-old Zoe Ivanoff of Unalakleet, was contacted in a pullout at Mile 47 of the highway, north of the Seward's junction with the Sterling Highway, by a trooper who discovered that she had a revoked driver's license. Ivanoff was issued a summons to appear in court for driving with a revoked license, and a tow truck was called to take Ivanoff's Nissan Pathfinder from the scene.

As the summer gets chaotic, a relaxing float on the Kenai River can be a wonderful getaway. Starting at Mile 50.1 of the Sterling Highway, it takes about two hours to float down 10 river miles. So we gear up and get into the raft. A simple takeoff and the adventure begins. "The first section we're going to float through is the Chugach National Forest," said guide Kyle Kelley. Kelley is with Alaska Wildland Adventures and knows the river well. "Being here for 13 years, every time you go down something amazes you," said Kelley.
