For those who like their competition with a little spike to it, the West Spiketacular is going on this weekend at the site of the State Championship Tournament in November. Twenty teams from across Alaska will compete. The Spiketacular, gives teams a mid-season glimpse of where they stand against programs outside their own region. “This tournament is amazing and we've been coming for a while, and it's just a nice way to get off of Kodiak. We don't have other teams to play expect our own. It's exciting to come here and play against all these great teams,” said Samantha Oliver, Kodiak senior.

The University of Alaska Anchorage’s volleyball team’s upset defeat of Western Washington University put the Seawolves back into the race for the GNAC title -- an opportunity that was apparently crushed Thursday. A three-game loss at the hands of 15th-ranked Seattle Pacific, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14, drove the Seawolves back to .500 in conference. Robyn Burton enjoyed a sensational match with 11 kills and an attack percentage of .588, but UAA had a tough time finishing out games, dropping five straight points near the end of the second game.

The Seawolf volleyball team has dropped out of the Division II top 25. The Demotion comes after UAA had mixed results on an eight-match road trip. Chris Green and company played three top 15 opponents and another returning NCAA Tournament squad during that stretch and finished 4-4. The Seawolves also played the entire trip minus star middle blocker Cortney Lundberg. The senior is still recovering from an ankle injury. UAA still feels good about its long-term chances, especially should Lundberg return healthy.

There’s some discontent about the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball sqaud's performance this week, with the Seawolves having lost three of their last four games, leaving them 6 and 5 overall and 1 and 2 in conference play. To put that showing in perspective, though, it’s not all that different from last year's record at this point. The eventual league champions stood only 8 and 5, and also dropped the GNAC home opener. Then again, the 2009 Seawolves got hot and won 13 games straight.

Despite recent losses, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team is still in position to make a return to the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Seawolves hang on to the No. 7 ranking in this week's regional poll, with the top eight teams earning NCAA bids. Selections for the regional, which will likely be held at California State-San Bernardino, come after this weekend's final regular-season matches. That said, UAA can ill afford a slipup against 2 and 20 St. Martin's in a Thursday home game.
